Book Description

5 Jun 2008 Legend of the Four Soldiers (Book 1)

The ton loves nothing more than a good scandal, and they're giddy with the appearance of wealthy Samuel Hartley. Not only is he self-made, American, and in the habit of wearing moccasins, but he is also notorious for fleeing a battle in which several English gentlemen lost their lives. What the ton doesn't know, though, is that Samuel is in London because of this massacre. He believes his regiment was given up to the enemy and won't rest until he finds the traitor.

Lady Emeline Gordon is captivated with Samuel. Not only does he defy convention with his unusual dress, his sensual smile, and his forthright manner, but he survived the battle that killed her beloved brother. Samuel suspects that the person responsible for her brother's death is Jasper Renshaw, Viscount Vale, a family friend since childhood - and Emeline's fiancé. Despite Emeline's belief in Vale's innocence and her refusal to break off her betrothal, she and Samuel begin a passionate affair. But can their relationship survive the fallout from Samuel's investigation?

5.0 out of 5 stars To Taste Temptation 12 Sep 2012

I am a great fan of Elizabeth Hoyt as she has a wonderful way of putting in a really good story. I started off with book 4 by chance of The Legend of the Four Soldiers, and was so intrigued by it that I bought the other three and have been very pleased with the resulting stories. I loved the Fairy Tale start to each episode and they fitted well together as the stories unfolded.
I have read all her other books and look forward to her next one March 2013 with bated breath.
I like that I can pre-order any book from Amazon and they will deliver promptly, even before their stated delivery date very often.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Story, but not a favourite 8 Jun 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lady Emeline Gordon, a widow with a child is very much a prim and proper lady. She's also promised to Viscount Vale, who although she doesn't love, believes the marriage will suffice. One day, an American man called Samuel Hartley turns up in London wearing 'unusual' clothes. Emeline reveals her disgust, since he doesn't appear a gentleman, unlike the other fashionably dressed men in town. Hartley claims he's seeking out her services to train his younger sister, Rebecca, to be a proper young lady, so she can be accepted into society. But Hartley isn't telling his sister nor Emeline the complete truth. He's back to learn the truth from his former comrades in the war he fought, believing they were betrayed. But by whom? Was it one of his so-called friends? Emeline's fiancé?

Hartley is clearly affected by his traumatic past, and eventually lets Emeline into his heart, who despite her initial frostiness, begins to soften towards this man. He is a very good runner, and often goes on runs, just to get away from things, even in his poorly made moccasins, which results in his feet being torn to shreds. I enjoyed the moments where Emeline tends to his wounds and you think they might finally get together publically, but Hartley believes she is 'above' him in terms of station, and it wouldn't work. But when the past catches up and puts his sister and Emeline in danger, he vows to return them safely, even if it means forming some sort of alliance with Viscount Vale.

Overall, the book was good, but it wasn't a favourite. Later on, the author tries to show reasons for Emeline's coldness, but it dragged on too long in my opinion. Hartley doesn't seem to care that she's betrothed to his former comrade, and persues her, alongside his attempts to find out the truth.

There are four in the Soldiers series, and I read 'To Beguile a Beast' first, which I preferred. To me, it doesn't make much difference which order you read them. I've already bought book 4 of the Soldiers series, and will read it in the next week or so.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just So,So only. 18 Jan 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I know I gave this book a 4* should be 3* instead mainly because EH is a good writer. And this book is well written I like how she descriped the horror of the war in America between the native American and British soldiers and I enjoyed the fairy tale running through out the book, which is one of Ms Hoyt signature. The interaction between Emeling and Samuel is realistic enough just that it didn't sizzle, It was more of a fizz than a bang.
