Formerly a leading light in the critically adored mid-90's London-based band "Jack", Anthony Reynolds evolved his alter-ego as Jacques in 1997, so
To Stars is well overdue. Very much in the same campy-pop vein as label-mates the
Divine Comedy, the aim of this album was, allegedly, to inject a bit more "fun" into the downbeat musical landscapes Reynolds loves to create. For Reynolds, though, "fun" isn't the same thing as it might be for Steps, the Archies or even Jonathan Richman. In fact, a cover of Abba's "The Day Before You Came" is about as chirpy as it gets. Elsewhere, he's reminiscing about having sex while listening to neighbours fighting, or fretting about how miserable his past has been. Yup, Jacques is adrift in a gloriously self-absorbed world where Jacques Brel and Scott Walker are kings, where smoky late-night MORgrooves are de rigeur, and where the smoke from the Gauloises curls up towards a light bulb with no shade. If that sounds like your thang, dive right in, because almost nobody does it better.
