Good short story'the heroine starts out strong and independent but then mysteriously requires the aide of her separated husband a little too much. Why couldn't she stay strong and independent

4.0 out of 5 stars One major problem 24 May 2014

It's too short!

I realise it's a novella, but I did want more. There wasn't enough time to develop the characters as much as I should have wished. The leads were engaging and attractive, with the possible exception of Alistair...

Would definitely read more. So hopefully this is a series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great mix of mystery, romance and mysticism 14 Sep 2014
By BK - Published on Amazon.com

This novella has it all: suspense, mystery, romance and a bit of the supernatural. Kathleen Marks has done a great job of weaving all these elements into an interesting and intriguing read. I love that the plot was fresh and unexpected. and I love her use of the word 'preternatural'! That's one you don't hear every day. I liked that I could read it all in one afternoon - it kept the suspense high. I recommend this for anyone who likes an unexpected twist with a unique storyline.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystery and Romance 21 April 2014

Just finished reading this novella. Good characters and some unusual ones, like Ivy the cat, and good storyline. Mystery and romance. It was different but too short wanted it to go on. I would read the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I had a 4.8 rating 24 Mar 2014
By mamapow - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a quick read with very interesting characters. I have not read a "preternatural" story before and I found it quite intriguing. Set in the late 1800's, Alex has issues about a mystery surrounding her young daughter being murdered and her estranged husband, Rick. She has several mysterious critters and an uncanny sense to know when something strange is going on. Rick searches for hidden treasures, ghosts, demons and such. Alex's uncle brings them together to use their combined gifts to solve the murders going on in his home and around town.
I liked the story and the mystery. The one thing that made me drop my rating from a 5 to a 4.8 is that the word "preternatural" is used a lot which kind of bugged me for some reason. If that little thing doesn't bother you then this novella is a great read. I would definitely read another Dalton and Dalton mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful, unique read 19 Sep 2014
By Susan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I loved it. I don't usually read novellas. I'm a the-thicker-the-better novel reader, but this was adorable. I felt the author did an amazing job getting so much detail into such a short space. I was a little puzzled by some of the references to the past relationship/ experiences between Alex and Rick. It made me wonder if this was book 2 or 3 or something, and that I should go back and catch them, but the title says it's book one. However, that intrigue alone made me want to read more. The "preternatural" events were delightfully spine tingling, the mystery good, and the characters as imperfect as humans ought to be portrayed.
