Recorded in 1987, this collection of Burns songs is set to the music chosen in many cases by the poet himself and arranged by Kenneth McKellar for chamber orchestra (a piano, a string quintet, a flute and two French horns). The result is a very pleasing recital combining Scots anthems, cheeky comic songs and tender love lyrics, the latter of which are, of course, my own favourites (only I am not sure that the original tune to My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose really suits it better than the later and more familiar one). Jacobites will enjoy Kenmure, though: "Here's Him that's Far Awa', Willie, here's Him that's Far Awa'; And Here's the flower that I love best, the Rose that's like the snaw!"

Kenneth McKellar has done Rabbie Burns songs better than any that I have heard before. This album should be a part of ANY BURNS lovers collection , and he does it better than ayone has done and, yet again, his love for his country and the Bard comes through so powerfully.
