Brutal Finesse 11 July 2008
Format:Audio CD
The musical growth demonstrated over Celtic Frost's first three albums was staggering and this album represents their peak as an extreme metal band before they got even more wildly experimental on Into The Pandemonium. Although this is a brutally heavy album it's the addition of female backing vocals, classical instruments and lyrically and musically more complex songs that gives it another dimension, not to mention the incredible H.R. Giger artwork. Once the booming french horn kicks off Innocence and Wrath you know you are in for a unique listening experience. The album is strong throughout but The Usurper, Dawn of Meggido, Circle of the Tyrants and Necromantical Screams are all classics and deserve special mention.

Top of the Frost 25 Mar 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well having kerrang put me off buying the Morbid tales EP and Emperors return EP with low ratings and rumours of sloppy playing , i couldnt resist buying this LP whatever they said ( gatefold sleeve , great art work , esoteric song titles it spelt out greatness ) . It blew me away from the first song to the last , fantastic guitar sound ,Doomy yet thrashy great vocals ( death grunts all over the place ), time changes , progressive interludes , guitar solos that make you grab the sweeping brush n air guitar too , strange that Tom once said he hated his own solos ?? But basically its heavy metal all the way , even with the experimentation involved . Its brilliant , if you love doom thrash death whatever extreme metal is called nowadays you wont fail to like this . To be honest the next release Into the pandemonium got massive 5 star reviews , the true metal heads were not taken in though , it was rubbish compared to this . We know where the best Frost lies , its on here . Get it !!!!!

...The Usurper"s Tears, Guide My Sword 27 Feb 2009
By Shad Nunemaker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
"Blood and sand, mark the way...the usurper's tears guide my sword".

Look kids, if you still don't know what Warrior is saying in the lyrics of this album, then you probably don't know about the Necronomicon either, or Giger, or forgotten memories.

This music is to be understood, not merely listened to and head banged to (although that is somewhat inevitable). I still believe this to be the most brutal and yet articulate masterpiece of occult lore in the medium of music and other imagery.

If you are a soldier, and the the other guys are listening to Metallica, then you had better be listening to Celtic Frost. Morbid Tales, too.

I heard once that the military was experimenting with the playing of heavy metal to combat terrorists. Well folks, drop a couple of hits of LSD under his tongue, wait an hour, then play this album with surround sound full volume. Try that and let me know how it works.

Thanks.

Shad

An underappreciated metal masterpiece 10 Sep 2011
By David Keppel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is not a review for the people who are familiar with this album. Instead, I wanted to say a few words of recommendation for music fans who might be considering adding this to their collection.
First, I wanted to say that I am not a lifelong Celtic Frost fan. Truth be told, I only started listening to them in the past few months. I remember seeing this album in my brother's vinyl collection many years ago & the cover art ingrained itself into my memory. I stumbled across this album recently & decided to take a chance on it. Glad that I did. This is an extremely heavy slab of metal that doesn't sound the least bit dated to my ears. It impressed me so much that after giving it multiple listens, I also ordered Morbid Tales & the Hellhammer album called Demon Entrails. All of these were fantastic but To Mega Therion struck me as the masterpiece of the 3.
If you like extreme metal and you want something seasoned but outside of the metal mainstream, this might be for you. It doesn't surprise me at all that this album was & is a huge influence on metal artists from around the world.
Incredible songs, incredible album!
Essential heavy metal album 10 Feb 2012
By J. Lucas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
It's a shame Celtic Frost aren't better known. (I confess, I only decided to check them out after hearing High on Fire's cover of the Usurper.) This is a very heavy album, and as other reviewers noted it doesn't sound dated, as you might expect from a heavy metal CD from 1985. Aside from the somewhat glammy look the guys in the band have in the photos, there is nothing glam about this CD. The closest comparison I can think of would be early Slayer. Frost's lead singer's voice is similar to Tom Araya's Reign in Blood era raspy growl, but they're certainly not a Slayer clone. The best way to put it is that they sound like a very heavy thrash band that go well with the other major thrash bands of the era, not to mention almost everything that has come since.

Buy this CD. You won't regret it.
