3.0 out of 5 stars A Victorian Romance 23 Oct 2004
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Our heroine is Sophia Wilson an American heiress, not having a taste for American men (and being a bit of an outcast in Americas moneyed society as her money is not old!) she has come to London for the 'season'. She doesn't reckon much too English men either until across a crowded ball room she sees James Langdon, the Duke of Wentworth known in society as the dangerous duke for his cursed family, his haunted castle and his womanizing ways a man made of stone with a black heart!
The duke never thought to marry but the estate is crumbling and the heiress attracts him, so he sets out to marry her by playing the romantic.
Once the honeymoon is over James takes Sophia to his castle in Yorkshire and that's when all the problems begin - as to start with he tells her he never loved her, his mother dislikes Sophia on principle, let alone the blackmail and James's younger sister causing problems.
It's the 1st Julianne MacLean book I've read, so I don't know if it is like all her others but it is nicely written. My only niggle is that her characters are very stereotypical in that Sophia the American is very outgoing and shows emotion whilst James is the personification of a reserved Englishman, although she gives you all the motivation behind their behaviour.

4.0 out of 5 stars not too bad 23 Feb 2006

This book was good although not as good as Lily's story, that is JAmes' sister. I did enjoy sophia though and her courage by never giving up. A bit boring thou. Ms Maclean is still one of my favourates.
