Oh, I did like To The Manor Born. I even had a wee boyhood crush on Penelope Keith, so this reissue of a BBC LP from the nineteen eighties came as a real treat. In case you're new to the show, Audrey fforbes-Hamilton's husband has died, and she is forced to leave Grantleigh Manor, taking up residence at the nearby Lodge. The big hoose has been bought over by the nouveau riche Richard DeVere, and the series follows the relationship between the two. The cast of the TV series included Penelope Keith as Audrey fforbes-Hamilton, Peter Bowles as Richard DeVere and Angela Thorne as Marjory Frobisher.
The CD actually contains excerpts from the series, presented in broadcast order, but that means you're only getting highlights squeezed into an hour, rather than whole episodes. Although, fair play, the editor has done a decent enough job, managing to maintain a story arc across the disc. Regardless, the performance of Ms Keith remains a delight and even if some of the humour is starting to creak around the ages, the basic story of crossing class barriers is fairly timeless. The cast are all in fine fettle, and it is a disc I'll be playing again, unlike some in the Vintage Beeb series. It's good that material like this is being reissued, and I'd certainly be up for more To The Manor Born.
