To The Manor Born has bridged the gap of time with this double tape. Once again we can share the ups and downs of life on the Grantleigh estate and enjoy some new stories from the pen of its creator Peter Spence. Great fun, shame Peter Bowles felt unable to recreate the role of Richard Devere, however all credit to Penelope Keith and Angela Thorne. Add to these the voice of Keith Barron as Richard and you have fun all the way. Special mention must be made of Margery Withers who at the age of 92 took on the part of Mrs Polouvicka, a part she was originally ear marked for nearly twenty years ago.

Penelope Keith is a national treasure. Her voice instantly recognisable; her
characterizations impeccable and unforgetable. The monstrous but loveable
Margot Leadbetter in 'The Good Life' during the seventies and here as the
posher than posh Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in 'To The Manor Born' are both
peerless inventions which manage to mix pathos and acerbic wit in equal
measure. She is a consummate professional and deft Mistress of her craft.

This BBC audio CD tracks Ms fforbes-Hamilton's fall from privilege as the
heir to a country pile, as an ostentatious businessman (the wonderful
Peter Bowles as Richard DeVere) slips, a little too easily, into her shoes.
Her long-suffering but devoted friend Marjory Frobisher, played beautifully
by Angela Thorne, is also on hand to support her (sometimes undeservedly)
through thick and thin. The series remains on of the most deliciously
funny and memorable programmes in the history of British television comedy.

Although the recording dips in and out of the narrative of the first series with
somewhat clumsy continuity, it is gratifying to hear it once more despite the rough
edges left by the editor's scissors. The story remains, nonetheless, both engaging
and entertaining. We will doubtless not see or hear its likes again.

Recommended.

This is a selection of audio extracts from the first series (7 episodes, 1979), lifted directly from the TV programme complete with audience laughter, and re-edited to form one continuous if slightly jumpy storyline. There's no additional material or linking dialogue, so if you've already got the series one DVD, there's nothing new here.

Thanks to some judicious editing, it does mostly work as a comedy audiobook. There are very few sight gags in the series anyway so mainly it's Penelope Keith's timing and demeaning persona that is the star of the show. There are some genuinely funny moments, and compressing the best bits from seven episodes into exactly one hour means that the jokes come pretty thick-and-fast in places, though not too much so. Some of it is a little dated and it seems a little toothless now, but it is still a joy.

The sound quality is absolutely excellent. As usual the "vinyl look" CD is pretty underwhelming- OK so it's a black CD that looks vaguely like a miniature LP, hardly a big selling point. More importantly though there's a good hour of high-quality upper-class comedy on here, that's well worth a listen.

As To The Manor Born was a programme that I watched when I was a lot younger I felt very nostalgic about this CD. It is designed that way of course with its black disc made to look like a miniature record (like the others in the Vintage Beeb series) and it delivers about one hour of extracts from the first series of the show. The extracts are just of the best bits of course, but they do flow and actually it works quite well listening to it in this way, and I found the whole thing quite enjoyable. It's a little dated now but the magic is still there and if you liked it first time round then this disc will serve well as a reminder of one of the most popular sit-coms from that period.

It's worth noting that this disc has nothing to do with the radio version of To The Manor Born which was made and broadcast in 1997 - it's purely extracts from the first series of the television show which was first shown in 1979.

Audrey Forbes-Hamilton is forced to downsize following the death of her husband but she manages to retain the services of her butler. Grantley Manor and its estate are bought by food magnate Richard DeVere and an uneasy friendship develops between the two, marred by misunderstandings, misapprehensions and prejudices on both sides.

This is vintage comedy which is still funny more than twenty years after it was first broadcast. I found myself laughing out loud while listening to it even without being able to watch it on screen I could picture what was going on. Audrey at her husband's funeral trying to appear sufficiently grief stricken and then trying to settle into her new much smaller home and survive on a much reduced income. Then the advertisement for one of DeVere's products which does not go at all as intended.

Nostalgic listening for all who remember this iconic series.

This is a reproduction of a vinyl record produced by the BBC. Accordinly the CD looks a little like a record and the packaging resembles the original LP.

However, the reproduction of an LP means that this is a single CD which runs for just an hour. Also, as there were subsequent programmes in the series this CD does not summarise the whole run. The audio editor has done a remarkable jiob in reducing a long running series to an hour long CD which is remarkably coherent. It's a pleasant listen but no more. If you're a fan of the series it may be worth buying but it's not something I'd be rushing out to buy for myself. However, at the price you're not taking much of a risk.
