Nostalgia 6 May 2012

Format:Audio CD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Audrey Forbes-Hamilton is forced to downsize following the death of her husband but she manages to retain the services of her butler. Grantley Manor and its estate are bought by food magnate Richard DeVere and an uneasy friendship develops between the two, marred by misunderstandings, misapprehensions and prejudices on both sides.

This is vintage comedy which is still funny more than twenty years after it was first broadcast. I found myself laughing out loud while listening to it even without being able to watch it on screen I could picture what was going on. Audrey at her husband's funeral trying to appear sufficiently grief stricken and then trying to settle into her new much smaller home and survive on a much reduced income. Then the advertisement for one of DeVere's products which does not go at all as intended.

Nostalgic listening for all who remember this iconic series.

Format:Audio CD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
To the Manor Born was an iconic programme from the late 70's and early 80's. It made a star out of Peter Bowles and reaffirmed the brilliance of Penelope Kieth as a comedic actress. I can remember being glued to the TV on Sunday nights to watch this wonderful comedy. The CD is a recording of the first episode and has been edited in such a way that you understand what is going on, even if you have never seen nor heard about the series before.

The brilliance of the script and the ambiguities of the characters all come across in this all too short one hour recording. I think it would be wonderful if more of the 3 series were put on CD, so I could listen to them in my car.

Whilst the CD is good and the script brilliant, it leaves me with a question...why would the BBC put only a short episode on a CD? Are there more to follow or is this it? It does not quite make sense to me unless there are more to collect.

Its a great series and this short but sweet CD is worth listening to, but it will leave you wanting to listen to more of the wonderful scripts.

To the Manor Born was a series that showed just how good the BBC once were.

Recommended.

Class War 11 May 2012
By Mr. H TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Oh, I did like To The Manor Born. I even had a wee boyhood crush on Penelope Keith, so this reissue of a BBC LP from the nineteen eighties came as a real treat. In case you're new to the show, Audrey fforbes-Hamilton's husband has died, and she is forced to leave Grantleigh Manor, taking up residence at the nearby Lodge. The big hoose has been bought over by the nouveau riche Richard DeVere, and the series follows the relationship between the two. The cast of the TV series included Penelope Keith as Audrey fforbes-Hamilton, Peter Bowles as Richard DeVere and Angela Thorne as Marjory Frobisher.

The CD actually contains excerpts from the series, presented in broadcast order, but that means you're only getting highlights squeezed into an hour, rather than whole episodes. Although, fair play, the editor has done a decent enough job, managing to maintain a story arc across the disc. Regardless, the performance of Ms Keith remains a delight and even if some of the humour is starting to creak around the ages, the basic story of crossing class barriers is fairly timeless. The cast are all in fine fettle, and it is a disc I'll be playing again, unlike some in the Vintage Beeb series. It's good that material like this is being reissued, and I'd certainly be up for more To The Manor Born.
