I first heard about this title via a Teaser Tuesday post on a book blog and the teaser made me laugh so I checked the book out. As a pretty cheap read on the Kindle, I decided to give it a shot and I wasn't disappointed. It took just a couple of paragraphs to make me laugh as when Dulcie is introduced, she's...in a little bit of a sticky situation. A very funny one.

Dulcie is a fairy, working in law enforcement, her best friend is a witch, she's self conscious, dedicated, smart, a struggling writer and has a crush on her very hot boss. She's working a particularly hard case, with some interesting twists. One of the biggest being Knight Vander, who is working undercover. Only Dulcie is allowed to know why he's there, who he is (well, to a certain extent) and other select details about the case. I found Knight as entertaining as Dulcie, especially towards the end when, erm, something happened that made things that much more interesting. Not that they weren't before, because they were. But I think my favourite character was actually Sam, Dulcie's best friend. She'd not seen too much, but she's everything a best friend should be. Smarter, totally trust worthy, and willing to tease and push Dulcie when it's needed. Also, Sam is a witch and with some of the situations Dulcie finds herself in, this makes for a very useful job and an entertaining one as well.

I don't often read lighter, humorous fantasy. I'm a much bigger fan of dark urban fantasy. It just tends to suit me better, dark, dangerous, constantly facing difficult decisions and life threatening...threats. I can find works like this where its got a lighter feel to it, where humor is one of the biggest focuses (in all aspects of the story), tedious, dull and irritating. I can't often find myself really getting in to them.... But in this case, I did. I actually struggled to put it down, much to my surprise.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story, I really didn't figure out what was going on until the reveal. I guessed a couple things, but even those I only got partially right, a chapter or two before it happened. All the characters seem to have far more to them than you first assume. They're well rounded and believable. One of my favourite aspects of Dulcie is not actually her strength, but her self consciousness. It's not really a spoiler to say this so I'll explain a little more. Dulcie doesn't like having pointed ears. She thinks it's a big personal flaw and stops her being pretty despite being petite and slim. I think it's something that makes her very 'normal' for lack of a better word. Because I am certain every single person has something about themselves they wish they could change, something they worry about. And Dulcie has that, which helps make her that much easier to relate to, to care about. There were times when I did really wonder about Dulcie's sanity, I have to admit, but even when I was, I wasn't annoyed with her, I was laughing. And not really at her either, because I could see why she was thinking/doing what she was.

A fast paced read, a fun world to be a part of with some great world building. It's funny without being crazy or that feeling of the author trying too hard. The romantic aspect of the story wasn't actually given the page time I thought it would be, with other factors often over riding it. But it was fun and entertaining as well as having a unhurried feel to it, which I really liked. I actually only realised after I'd started the book (because apparently I didn't bother really looking in to it before buying it, I should stop doing that) that the author is self-published. So I admit I was more impressed at that point, because it really is a very well put together book with great characters and I was left wanting to know what happens next for Dulcie. It is well wrapped up, no major hanging plot lines and a satisfying conclusion, but plenty of room to explore more things in the next book. A very easy enjoyable read, that managed to hook me into the narrative immediately. Dulcie, the main character, was believable - yes I know she's a fairy!)filled with flaws that many of us can attest to. I enjoyed the chemistry between Dulcie and Knight, though as always I became a little frustrated at their relationship (hence the 4.5 stars and not 5!), though I recognise that Mallory can't give us everything! Keep dangling the proverbial carrot Mallory!

This is not a bad book, it's just not a great one either. There is, without doubt, the basis for a very good series as the author has created some decent characters and situations, but it just felt to me that the whole thing needed a lot more depth, almost as if we were getting the diet version of the book. Add in all the fat and sugar and bad stuff to bulk it out and it would have been a much more satisfying read.

Still over all? For a quick, cheap read, you could do a lot worse.

Really enjoyed this book! Dulcie is feisty, funny, and more than capable of kicking ass, and has the enviable power of being able to pretty much create anything she wants with her fairy dust - who wouldn't kill to be able to do that?!
I must admit, Jolie from the Jolie Wilkins series is still my favourite character, but Dulcie is a close second! :)
If you enjoy light hearted fantasy, this is for you!

So if you read a lot of UF, you know what I'm talking about: you sit down expecting a pacey, action packed, possibly frightening UF novel and end up with soft porn, lightly interpersed with shallow plot lines and predictable endings.

This isn't what you get here. I'll admit, I nearly put it down because the beginning felt samey, but it's well worth it after about thirty pages, the story gets going properly and the characters gain depth.

I got it on Smashwords because I've got an ereader; would've bought from amazon but they won't let me :(

Try it, you might like it!

I'll admit, I was initially attracted by the cover design - fun, quirky, with a touch of retro-chic about it, coupled with an original sounding plot synopsis and some positive reviews, I thought it would be worth a try.

Boy was I wrong.

The book attempts to be a hybrid of 'chick-lit', 'urban fantasy' and 'detective thriller' but unfortunately ends up as a tangled mess with serious pacing issues. I slogged through it all the way to the end, but I'm afraid that speaks more for my pig-headed determination than for any sense of suspense created by the narrative. With three potential love interests and a subplot about Dulcia's attempts to write a novel, the detective story gets pushed so far into the background that you tend to forget about the crime that she and Knight are trying to solve in the first place.

The book describes itself as an urban fantasy, but the universe is really too underdeveloped to merit the name. We are told that magical creatures emerged from the proverbial closet some years ago, but apart from a series of pop-culture references there is little exploration of how the integration of two societies has progressed and it has so little bearing on the plot that one wonders why the author didn't just make her magical universe a self-contained one. In an attempt to make it 'dark', (or perhaps simply to include some kinky S&M scenes?) half of the detective work is done 'under cover' at Club Payne, where Dulcia freaks out so much that you wonder if she really has the stomach for detective work....

Dulcia herself makes for a thoroughly unsatisfying heroine, depending so much on her 'fairy abilities' (quick reflexes, and fairy dust which can basically do anything she wants it to do - from changing her outfit to conjuring lightening bolts,) that when she is placed in situations where her magic doesn't work she is helpless and ineffectual.

In order, presumably, to make her 'accessible', two rather unconvincing subplots ('should I get cosmetic surgery?' And 'my best-friend's ex-boyfriend is interested in me,') are shoveled into the already overburdened narrative, and much of the humour revolves around Dulcia making a fool of herself. Unfortunately she tends to do much of this in her professional capacity, usually by asking silly questions or making bad judgements. The author over-eggs the humiliation pudding so much that you are left wondering why on earth this character chose to become a police officer in the first place, since she apparently has little in the way of intuition and no gift for interrogation.

Indeed, Dulcia herself seems to have little sense of calling for policing; her main aim in life seems to be to finish and publish her novel, a romance of dubious quality. This is obviously supposed to be witty and ironic, and when the idea is first introduced, it actually is. The problem is that it becomes a major subplot - the progress of the novel starts to take precedence over that of the crime investigation. Whereas any other fictional detective worth their salt would be obsessing over a case until they cracked it, this fairy stresses about her case-load getting in the way of her writing, and tries to multitask witness protection with book research. She takes her novel so seriously that you actually start to feel a little embarrassed for her (it is, after all, not a very good one).

As for the (presumably) main love interest, Knightley Vander may as well have come with a T-shirt saying "I Am Really Mysterious" in bold red letters. Unfortunately his 'mysterious-ness' is conveyed not by an intriguing and ambiguous character, but rather a series of unexplained absences, strange motives and inexplicable behaviour. The author in fact spends so long showing us how mysterious he is that we don't get any real sense of a developing relationship with Dulcia, and as a result the romantic scenes are unconvincing and awkward.

In short, this is something of a genre car wreck, with so many subplots fighting it out for attention that the main narrative thread gets swallowed up, and so many relationships being explored that the romance which should provide the emotional core of the story is reduced to a series of awkward conversations and contrived entanglements.

It gets an extra star for the cover design and for not being an angst-ridden vampire romance, but I'm afraid these are about the only things I have to say in favour of it. Read more ›
