Well, you have to have read the other four to even begin to understand what this is all about - there's way to much history to drop into the series here.
Synopsis: (and apologies if you're a dedicated review reader - I got myself in a muddle last time and stuck this synopsis onto book 4 - duh!)

Dante Valentine has been through Hell. Literally. Her body shattered and her mind not far behind, she's dumped back into her own world to survive--or not--as a pawn in one of Lucifer's endless games.

Unfortunately, he's just messed with the wrong Necromance. And this time she's mad enough to do something about it.

This time, the Devil will pay.

Okay, this was a bit disappointing in that in doesn't really have a "wrap up all the loose ends and they all lived happily ever after" sort of ending, and to be fair, given the dark subject matter, maybe that was never on the cards. This is a downbeat book - nobody smiles or laughs, other than grimly, and there's no lightening of the awfulness - the only relief Dante gets from the misery of it all is when she allows herself to be comforted by Japhrimel - but even then she's usually crying.
To be sure, several ends are tied off, but you are left wondering if Dante is ever going to recover and if she ever finds a way to live with Japhrimel and be happy about it. There's some brilliant bits - where Japhrimel first returns to her after she has been chucked out of Hell is a wonderfully emotional bit of writing, but the end leaves a lot of questions unanswered. The first time I read the book I re read the last few chapters immediately, assuming I'd somehow missed something. I've just reread the series, and again found myself thinking that another chapter would have helped.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Dante Valentine" series book 5 19 Dec 2010
By Book Addict TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The fifth and final book in this dark urban paranormal series is almost perfect. Dante (Danny) Valentine; powerful Necromance and the beloved Hedaira of one of Hell's most feared demons has just survived 6 months in Hell as Lucifer's personal torture toy. She may be left vulnerable and fragile but again Danny is consumed by vengeance, and this time her target is none other than her greatest enemy; the Prince of Hell.

Initially it appears Danny has little chance against Lucifer even with the help she has from a motley crew of demons, Psions and others she can't quite label. Japhrimel will do anything to keep her alive; even betraying those she has sworn to protect, whilst the search is on for a blade able to kill any demon no matter how powerful it may be. Danny is prepared to wield this dagger, and if the infamous Dagger of Sorrow can kill any demon, then it can kill Lucifer.

Expect all the action, drama, treachery and trickery found in the previous 4 books. Danny unfortunately (as always) ends up out the loop as Japhrimel fails to disclose vital information and yet again she is left doubting the demon who loves her. There are the standard battle scenes and gory injuries sustained and plenty of twists and turns in the plot, leaving Danny uncertain as to who she should trust. There is a conclusive end to this series; however I was left feeling a little cheated as LS never really delves into the history of the Hedaira when it's such a vital (and interesting) part of the story line. The final few chapters are gripping, and although as previously stated there is closure to the adventures of Dante and Japhrimel, it is done in such a way that the series could be continued.

As I've said before, this is a dense, challenging read; it is not for everyone. It's set 600 years in the future. American English has evolved and the terms used in the book will give you pause now and then as you figure out what the author meant. It's a dark and violent urban fantasy, and the perspective is from the inside of Dante' head - you read her internal monologue alongside dialogue and narrative; it can be a bit confusing BUT, I really liked the futuristic world created by the author - I found it intriguing.
This concluded Dante's story. There are plots and counterplots too numerious to mention, but it boils down to Dante backing Eve vs. the devil. Japh only cares about saving Dante, so at times he seems to be pro-Eve other times anti-Eve. Sometimes he has bargains in effect with the Devil, other times he's double crossing him. Dante gets a lot more info about being a heidiera (bride of a fallen demon) in this book, and by the end, she seems to have as happy an ending as possible for her, given what she's been through. I like that the ending leaves an openning for more stories down the road.

I came to Lilith Saintcrow via Jim ButcherStorm Front (Dresden Case Files)and I was initially a little disappointed. She has some great ideas but Working for the Devil (Dante Valentine Novels) was so poorly edited as to expose the authors relative inexperience. Especially the characterisation of Dante who comes across as a complete psychopath in the first book. However, Saintcrow took pains to explain why she was like this in Dead Man Rising (Dante Valentine Novels) and, apparently realising what a nutter Dante seemed to be, softened her a bit over the next 2 books. It could almost pass for personal growth but I suspect it was more of a mistake. By the final book in the series, Saintcrow has improved her writing considerably and the book also has a much better structure avoiding the deus ex machina endings that closed the first two books. However, Dante does still do another of wildly illogical things that are needed for the plot and the ending has so many twists as to be a little frustrating rather than exciting.

To summarise, Hell & Back shows a great deal of progress in the author's skills and I'll give Night Shift (Jill Kismet Books) a look.
