In my opinion, this is his best album, capturing as it does the many facets of this superb British musician's technical and creative ability. All of the tracks are memorable but my particular favourite is the first "The Healing Song". It's a very simple melody taken at an easy tempo with Courtney's sax sounding very Getz-like with a beautiful full and mellow tone and the accompanyment is perfect.To show his allegiance to Coltrane, he makes it interesting by going off into some wild improvisation halfway through, before going back to the main theme. This is one which stays in your head such is it's simple beauty.
"Psalm", based on the 23rd Psalm melody is similar and memorable. "Eastern Standard Time" is a return to Pine's West Indian roots- a rhythmic calypso style number with a basically simple melody. Not jazz as we know it at the start, but then the Coltrane-inspired improvisation midway through the number changes that. The remaining tracks are mostly of a high standard too.
An excellent example of the work of Britain's best contemporary jazz musician.

An amazing cd. Courtney Pine has managed to mix African history with jazz in an awesome way. He plays sax wonderfully and writes amazing songs. This album has 7 of his originals. He has also included 2 traditionals, 'Zaire' and 'Psalm', plus one by Bob Marley, 'Redemption Song'. There are 3 other songs, including a one and a half minute drums only track, by the drummer Mark Mondesir. Courtney quotes, among others, The Book of The Dead, Egyptian Magic, Holy Bible, Holy Qu'ran, Bhagavad Gita, the way of the Sufi, Black Athena, The Perfumed Garden of the Shaykh Nefzawi, The Isis Papers and of course, Africa: Mother of Western Civilization as his sources of inspiration. On 'Children Hold On' the intro voice is none other than Lois Farakhan. Get this cd .. you will also be inspired.

Late Night Essential

Weather it's 4am or 6pm Sunday evenning this album is sure to hit the spot. Personally, I belive that (Modern Day Jazz Stories) is some of Pine's better works, but (To The Eye's of The Creation) is also quite impressive too. This album displays Pine's more technical side of the sax, which is insanley great. Another cool feature here is the change of feels, tempos that just melt correctly all in one endless journey. Track after track is ideal and essential for any Jazz fan, or someone looking for that choice album to rotate on a lazy Sunday aftergroove day whilst Bar-B-Q'ing some bareback ribs, and downing a few cold ones. Do yourself a favor take a journey to the eyes of creation. -CML

I find this record disappointing and, considering the final results, not a little pretentious. You get the usual spiritual name checking in the "influences" section (the Tibetan Book of the Dead(!), The Egyptian Book of the Dead, African spirituality, etc. etc) but there isn't much in the music to show where all those influences went.
There ARE memorable moments, dont' get me wrong and hence the 2 stars. But there just aren't enough of them to really make a difference.
Moods tend to clash against each other preventing the album from really setting an atmosphere or developing, and the music goes from the rather beautiful "Healing Song" to the plodding. pedestrian RB of "Children Hold On". The whole thing feels like a jumbled collection of individual pieces rather than a coherent album.
Get an Alice Coltrane record instead. It'll probably be everything this record tries (and fails) to be.
