The electrifying true story of a race against time to solve the greatest mystery of polar exploration. Facing some of the most hostile terrain on the planet, how did Arctic pioneer Robert Peary travel 413km in just 37 days to reach the North Pole with only dogs and wooden sleds as his transportation? 100 years later, British explorer Tom Avery and his team set themselves against the elements to recreate Peary's journey, risking their lives to break the record and rewrite history.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting polar adventure 4 April 2009
Format:Hardcover
A fascinating insight into polar exploration. This book will appeal to anyone with an interest in a true story of extreme adventure. The epic begins with a brief taste of the conditions Avery and his team experienced on the Arctic ice before detailing the motivation behind the expedition. The first chapter reviews the various attempts Robert Peary made to reach the North Pole over one hundred years ago and the controversy which brewed following his claim that he had finally become the first person to reach the Pole in 1909. Avery's expedition aimed to replicate Peary's conquest to determine whether such an approach could have been successful. The next two chapters explain the meticulous planning involved in preparing for such an arduous undertaking. This is important background to fully understand the difficulties faced on the ice.

As the expedition begins, the book reverts to a detailed diary of Avery's progress and emotions while travelling across the treacherous Arctic ice. We learn that giant ice walls, followed by long strips of open water are a far greater impediment to reaching the Pole than the extreme cold. While we know from the outset that Avery's team breaks Peary's world record, the dash for the Pole becomes increasingly frantic and almost ended in calamity.

The final chapter is excellent and details the media storm created by the aftermarth of the expedition. Avery's success attracted inevitable criticism that one can't compare the modern era with the limited technolgy Peary had at his disposal. Yet in many respects Avery's team had the greater challenge. It should banish any remaining doubts about the validity of Peary's achievement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant adventure book 21 April 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is not only a fascinating adventure story but also a valuable insight into the credibility of Robert Peary's claims to have been first man to make it to the North Pole. It brings to life the mind-boggling achievements of past Polar explorers and has convinced me once and for all that Peary was the first to get there, despite the controversies that surrounded his trip at the time.

I highly recommend this book. If you are an adventurer, an historian, a dog lover (!) or just in need of a great read, it is an honest, vivid, and at times amusing account of one of one of the Earth's great journeys. I couldn't put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars To the end of the earth 14 May 2011
Format:Hardcover
Easy to read with two thrilling stories. Having read many books about the early pioneers in the Arctic and Antarctic it was refreshing to enter into this modern day adventure. Tom Avery's passion to attempt to prove that Peary realy did reach the North Pole is admirable. A must read for anyone with adventure in the blood.

4.0 out of 5 stars north pole 18 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover
In 1909 Admiral Robert Peary and his team reached the North Pole in 35 days. His claims were ridiculed in America and Europe as being impossible.
In 2005 the author and his team attempted a replication of Pearys feat using identical equipment to vvalidate Pearys claim. In the end the author reached the North Pole 4 hours quicker than Peary.
The book is written in the form of a daily journal giving temterature, position in relation to Peary and miles to go.All well written and documented.
There is a forward by Prince Charles . A major defecit of the book is that there is no bibliography or index.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling 28 July 2009
Format:Hardcover
A great book detailing both Tom's own expedition to the pole as well the history and controversies of early attempts and successes. Written as both a diary and historical review it strikes the right balance between tales of Tom's challenges and adventures before, during and after the trip and facts about the geography, environment and history of the area. At times amusing and light hearted it doesn't shy away from the controversy the trip awakened and Tom's honest and straight forward style provides a fascinating insight into the life of an explorer both today and in Peary's time and similarities between them.

A compelling read, enjoy.
