LEARN:: Why Most People FAIL At Getting Things Done

Are you creating to-do lists that never get to-done? It's easy to start each workday with a lengthy list of tasks. Then something unexpected comes up. Next thing you know, the day is almost over. You work hard at a frantic pace, but you end up feeling frustrated because there's not enough time to do everything.

We all write lists with the hope that they will turn us into productivity machines. Sadly, to-do lists often have the opposite effect. The wrong type of list can be de-motivating, causing you to slack off and procrastinate.

The truth is anyone can write a list. The hard part is creating a list that's actionable and also fits into your busy life. Rethink the way you manage your daily life.

Specifically, you should use multiple lists that cover different types of task. That's the core concept you'll learn in the following book: "To-Do List Makeover: A Simple Guide to Getting the Important Things Done."

Have just finished week 2 of using the To Do List Makeover and am thrilled with the results! I am using Evernote as recommended in the book and by following the approach in the book am really making progress with my number 1 priority of getting my new website up and running. This is not a 'quick fix' book, it is rather a steady helpful guide to how to make the important things happen in your life and has been hugely helpful in showing how you can focus and manage all the other distractions from social media, email etc etc. It is very practical and realistic and gives alternatives and approaches that you can try out and adapt to suit your own needs and preferences. Am very pleased that I bought it and have had the opportunity to try it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars To do list reinvigorated 15 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a clever analysis of the humble "to do list" which I am sure any purchaser of this book is already using. Those that don't use a to do list either possess a superior intellect or else occasionally forget things. For me I have to report that if I think of 2 to do's then I have been known to forget one while writing down the other. For me at least ideas and intentions have to be captured at the earliest moment, so I have pen and paper always to hand. As a daily user of lists, I am already using some of the techniques but I see the sense incorporating mind maps in with what I do and found the web recommendations useful. Despite the low price, the book offers up to date and clear ideas that I personally find more user friendly than David Allen or Brian Tracy, whose eat that frog I found unappealing, whilst otherwise a fan of that author and speaker.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good content let down by lack of editing 12 Sep 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
S J Scott provides a really useful, practical method for wrangling different organisational tools into a cohesive method to boost productivity and keep track of all the details of you life. There isn't necessarily a lot of new information here, but I really appreciate the way that he shows us real-life methods to implement well-trodden but sometimes abstract productivity advice. It's also wonderfully short and direct, without a lot of the scene-setting that many other productivity books (ironically!) like to waste my time with. Definitely a solid 5 stars for the content.

However, it loses two stars for the lack of editing. Just before the conclusions, the author gives his own list for achieving productivity; the list ends with "Action 9: Make Hard Decisions" followed by "Step 9: Practice Continuous Improvement". It's errors like these as well as a clear lack of polish to the prose that really highlight the need for an editor. It was noticeable throughout the book, and I strongly feel that if I'm paying for a book (especially one that's just 98 pages) it should be professionally edited. I'm interested to read more of S J Scott's material but I hope he finds his way to an editor first.

I didn't start of with great expectations of this having read a few cheap kindle books on this subject which weren't that great and the intor on this didn't start out that inspiring. I Also read about the Getting things done GTD system and had found it to be over fussy and not realistic for my working style.

This, by contrast is a simple and practical task management approach. Even some of the tips on motivating yourself to actually get the stuff done helped give me another angle on it (whereas as before i've mostly seen self help platitudes and generalities in these kind of books). And i've actually begun to implement the weekly planning session - which is one of the major strengths of the book. This method of planning for the week is explained very well and is very effective.

He mentioned the book 'small habits' and w the idea of starting habits as small as possible and then building them up to avod motivation and willpower problems is first rate. personally i\ve found that book to be a little wordy and top heavy on theory. I'd definitely recommend anyone checking out BJ Fogg's free tiny habits program. Google it (i'm not getting a commission for mentioning it! :-)

I believe BJ Fogg is the guy who's developed the absolute best way for developing habits generally. Its blown anything else out of the water for me by 300%. However the methods in this book are very adaptable to the Tiny Habits method.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rethink your to-do's 31 May 2014

Like many people I have great plans but do have a habit if getting overwhelmed or side-tracked. This book is a great way of working out to-do strategies that are actually useful - and don't end up as yet another unfinished list of things to do!
