3.0 out of 5 stars Another winner 17 Sep 2006
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This tells the story of Phoebe and Deverell, Viscount Paignton and is another Bastion Club Novel. Phoebe is marriage shy due to being assaulted in her younger days and as a result runs an agency to help rescue maids who are at risk from their employers. Deverell realising that a straight forward proposal of marriage will not work, becomes involved with all aspects of the agency in order to win Phoebes trust, and succeeds. Throw in some white slavers to give a bit of excitement and you have a trademark Laurens novel. I have only given this book 3 stars as bits seem to be repetition from earlier novels, and in places I wondered if a cut and pate had been used with only the names changed. However it is still a very good read, with interesting main and secondary characters, and a plot that holds your attention.

By Marshall Lord TOP 100 REVIEWER

This book is the fifth in the "Bastion Club" romance/espionage series if you don't count the prequel, "Captain Jack's Woman."

The Bastion Club series starts immediately after the battle of Waterloo, as described in "The Lady Chosen: Bastion Club Series, Book 1," as seven officers who have served Britain during the Napoleonic wars, first in the guards and latterly as spies, agree to support one another in time of peace. And particularly, as most of them need to marry, they found the Bastion Club as a place where they can meet away from the "matchmaking mamas" of the Ton and ensure that each has the best chance of finding the wife who is right for him, not some simpering miss thrown at him by society.

In the that book and the following six, all set between 1815 and 1816, each of the seven Bastion Club members finds his bride, as follows:

1) The Lady Chosen, Tristan Wemyss and Leonora Carling
2) A Gentleman's Honor, Tony Blake and Alicia "Carrington"
3) A Lady of His Own (Bastion Club), Charles St Austell and Penelope Selborne
4) A Fine Passion (A Bastion Club), Jack Warnefleet and Clarice Attwood
5) This book, To Distraction, Jocelyn Deverell and Phoebe Malleson
6) Beyond Seduction (Bastion Club), Gervase Tregarth and Madeline Gascoigne

The characters are real, yet the tone is light. Like always she delivers a plot that entertains. I wish I could find a man like Deverell!

4.0 out of 5 stars To balance some of the other feedback 7 Feb 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The latest in the Bastion Club series is just as sex-filled and wordy as previous stories so you either enjoy or not. The story is all there and its good (just padded with a lot of sex), lots of regency detail and plausibility, sure the Americanisations don't always sit well with the Brits but once you adapt to this its joy. Plus meeting the previous characters whets the appetite for more similar reading. I am a fan now and am very keen to find out the stories of the remaining club members but most particularly the mysterious Dalziel.
