Book Description

2 April 2008
The Paris-Dakar Rally is without doubt the most arduous and notorious off-road motorsport event on the planet. Considered one of the world's top five adventures, the human drama that unfolds each January is unparalleled. Tales of danger, blinding sandstorms, endless vistas of towering dunes, incredible hardships, trgedy and triumph have greatly contributed to the aura and mystique of the rally. In To Dakar and Back, Hacking, with De Clercq recount the three weeks of blood, sweat and tears that took him from the glitz of Paris tothe hinterland of North West Africa.

5.0 out of 5 stars To Dakar 26 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback
For those with an interest in the Dakar Rally (particularly the motorcycle part of the event), this is a very good read. This account of the first Canadian to complete the Dakar is well written, easy to read and fast paced like the event itself. I read this one in a day as I could not put it down. It gives a good insight into the preparations for the event, the motivation/mentality required to take part and the generally sporting camaraderie among the participants. There is information on the famous competitors and history of the event as well as good descriptions of the landscape of the countries on the route with interesting social/political comments. The author makes an interesting comparison between his own affluent Western lifestyle and the poor but possibly happier lifestyles of some of the locals he encounters en route. This is not just a motorsport book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reviews - so must be good read! 26 April 2014

Great seller! Product arrived quickly. Bought as a present for my son's birthday and though the race is now in South America, because he's grown up with the original Dakar rally he was thrilled to bits to receive this book. Nice to find something that's just right for a change. Not very likely to read it myself as not my cup of tea so can't give my own opinion of the book. Thanks.

This is a faboulous story. It goes well beyond racing into what is possible through the human spirit and cooperation.
4.0 out of 5 stars honest book about Dakar 3 Jun 2014

A very honest diary of the first Canadian to finish the Dakar. The best part of it is giving you the day to day experience of racing in the Dakar and experiencing African poverty up close. Surprisingly personal explanation of the range of emotions he went through.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heroic Journey 2 April 2014

Lawrence Hacking's book about Dakar was a great read. I've had a love of the Dakar for years and find being in the US coverage is always lacking. To read about one mans struggle with this epic race was a true joy and the fact that he finished was a heroic feat. Thanks for telling your story Lawrence and congrats.

I'm a big fan of the Dakar Rally and this book is the best I have read about participating in the event. Hacking was the first Canadian to finish the Dakar and his descriptions of participating are spot on. Highly recommended.
