This is the third book in the Devil Riders series.
Rafe Ramsey's brother, George, is busy trying to secure a wedding between Rafe and Miss Lavinia Fettiplace. Since George's marriage didn't produce any children, it is up to Rafe to secure the line of succession. But he has no desire to find a wife, and instead goes to Egypt to find Miss Alicia Cleeve, the long lost granddaughter of Lady Cleeve, a friend of his late grandmother. It was believed Alicia and her father died in Egypt, but upon hearing of her still living, is keen to be reunited with her. But when Rafe meets the young lady who resembles Lady Alicia, he finds her dressed as a boy, fearing what may happen to her if it's discovered she's a young white virgin lady. She has been living with a woman called Laila, and a young lad called Ali, on the streets of Cairo for six years since the death of her father. Rafe tells her it's her grandmother's wish to be reunited, but the girl says no, claiming her name isn't Alicia, it's Ayisha. Despite Ayisha's desire to return to England, she worries what may happen if her secret is discovered, and refuses to leave her friends in poverty. Rafe arranges for his friend, Baxter, to find accommodation for both Laila and Ali, by working for him in Egypt. When Ayisha sees Laila is happy to be 'working' for the handsome friend of Rafe's, she reluctantly accepts and goes on the boat with him to England. On the way, Ayisha and Rafe find themselves developing feelings for one another, but are to be kept in separate rooms as they are unmarried. Tragedy strikes when Rafe suddenly becomes ill, and the captain of the boat wants to abandon Rafe at the next port, fearing his illness may spread. Ayisha says she will look after him, but the captain brings some men along to carry out his orders. Ayisha takes matters in her own hands locks herself in Rafe's room and when she finds a pistol, threatens to shoot anyone who comes any closer. When Rafe recovers later, he is shocked to find Ayisha in his room and she tells him what happened. He is grateful, but when the captain finds out he's well, he asks who will conduct the wedding. Ayisha is puzzled, but Rafe is secretly happy. He explains it would be looked down upon if they didn't marry, as they stayed alone together in his room, and it couldn't be a secret, as everyone on board would know and likely spread the gossip when arriving in England. Seeing her reluctance, Rafe says they'll marry in England, so the captain declares Ayisha must return to her own room until then. Rafe learns the truth of Ayisha's past, but is still adamant Lady Cleeve will accept her. But when they arrive at Lady Cleeve's house, Lady Cleeve wishes to speak to Rafe alone first. Seeing this as a bad sign, Ayisha eavesdrop on their conversation, and gets upset when Lady Cleeve isn't happy that her 'Alicia' hasn't returned. She then hears of Rafe's intended wedding to Miss Lavinia, a real lady, and gets upset. Feeling rejected, she writes a letter to Rafe confessing her love but says she knows everything and she cannot be with him, fearing marrying her would mean his downfall. She leaves and Rafe finds her letter and gets angry, as he's since convinced Lady Cleeve that Ayisha isn't a bad person. He runs all over town, desperate to find the woman that he loves.
Overall, this book is much better than the first two in the series. I give it a 5/5! Well recommended!
