Book Description

4 Jun 2009 Legend of the Four Soldiers (Book 3)

Sir Alistair Munroe is a naturalist knighted for his service to the crown during the French and Indian War - a war that left him horribly maimed. Because of his scars he lives a near solitary existence in a crumbling Scottish castle. Until a dark and stormy night when he opens the door to a buxom beauty claiming to be his new housekeeper.

Helen Fitzwilliam has led a life full of mistakes, not least among them spending the last ten years as mistress to the Duke of Lister, a man without any kindness. But when the duke takes a new, younger mistress, Helen makes a decision she knows isn't a mistake. She leaves the duke, taking with her their two young children. Knowing that Lister hates to give up anything--even a mistress he's cast aside--Helen flees to Scotland and the home of a man she's never met.

These two wounded souls find an undeniable passion, and love, in each others arms, but the bliss of their relationship isn't to last. The Duke steals his children away from Helen, forcing her to reveal her true past to Alistair, and a friend from Alistair's army past is back from the dead--and quite possibly involved in the betrayal that lead to the massacre of their regiment

Helen Fitzwilliam has been the mistress of Algernon Downey, the Duke of Lister, for years. During that time, Helen has given birth to a daughter and a son. Lister has not come to Helen's bed for a very long time, yet refuses to let her go. Lister considers Helen and the kids as his property. If Helen even hints at leaving him, Lister takes the children away. Finally it is too much. With the help of Lady Vale, Helen and the children flee to Castle Greaves in Scotland. Helen is to pose as a widow and announce to Sir Alistair Munroe that she is his new housekeeper. Helen had been told the man was a recluse, but no one warned her of his ghastly scars of injured fingers. Unable to do anything but go forward, Helen must somehow convince the disagreeable man (she mentally addresses him as "Sir Beastly" due to his rudeness) to let her take the position of housekeeper. Every inch of the crumbling castle is caked with dust and grime. But this is the perfect place for Helen and the children to hide.

Six years ago Alistair had been charged with discovering and describing the flora and fauna of New England. It was a civilian position with the 28th Regiment of Foot. Due to a traitorous spy, the men walked into an ambush at Spinner's Falls. Alistair is one of only a few survivors. It was there he lost an eye and found the scars. Since no female or child can see him without screaming in horror, Alistair stays in his castle. The last thing he wants is a servant underfoot, much less two children. If only he did not find Helen so desirable or the children such a delight.

***** Elizabeth Hoyt loosely takes the foundation of the classic "Beauty and the Beast" fairy tale and spins a web of pure delight. Helen did what any good parent would by risking her life to remove her children from possible harm. But only a strong woman would be a match for Sir Beastly, right? As an added bonus, there is part of a short fairy-like-tale about the "Truth Teller" at the beginning of the prologue, each chapter, and the epilogue. I believe this story will be another sparkling diamond for the author's crown. Nothing less than magnificent! *****

Helen Fitzwilliam has been mistress to the Duke of Lister for fourteen years, but he doesn't love her. She's not sure he even likes her, he certainly never visits anymore. But the last time she tried to leave him, he took her infant daughter away, returning her only when his point had been made. Now Abigail is nine, and Helen also has little Jamie to worry about. Yet she can't stay with the duke any longer - she wants to be more than a possession.

When Viscountess Vale (To Seduce a Sinner) agreed to help and sent them to Scotland, Helen was too grateful to resist. Their arrival at Castle Greaves, however, is far from expected, and as Helen struggles with the misanthropic master, a sinister servant and the filthiest house she has ever encountered, she can't help thinking she's made a terrible mistake.

Sir Alistair Munroe knows she has. Left mutilated after the terrible events of Spinner's Falls, the celebrated naturalist wants only to be left alone. The last thing he wants is a beautiful housekeeper flitting about, letting her brats get underfoot.

But as the pair spend more and more time together, neither can deny their growing attraction. However with secrets and troubled pasts lying between them, can they ever have hopes for the future? And will the duke ever give Helen up that easily?

Elizabeth Hoyt continues her 'Legends of the Four Soldiers' series (To Taste Temptation, To Seduce a Sinner) with a sumptuous tale of beauty, beasts and troubled pasts. As always Hoyt delivers a cast of delightful characters made more real by the mistakes they've made. Helen is a strong heroine, struggling with the changes her choices have forced upon her, and the strain of keeping her children safe.

But it's Alistair's gradual emergence from his self-imposed isolation, combined with Abigail's point of view scenes that make this story so enjoyable. For all of them this story is about learning acceptance through love, and the rewards of happiness.

Hoyt's books are sheer indulgence - and this is one of her best - complete with another of her wonderful trademark fairytale chapter openers. And the stage is now set for the fascinating finale of the series - To Desire a Devil. I cannot wait! (Least of all to find out who the traitor is/was and whether Lister and Hasslethorpe had anything to do with it.)

This was the second Elizabeth Hoyt book I read and she didn't let me down. All the characters are excellent and the story was fast moving. The two main characters were strong but each with their own problems that they had to overcome. It was especially enjoyable to see Alistair come alive after shutting himself away from the world. Would strongly recommend this book to all romantic fiction lovers life myself.
