To Be Continued was Isaac Haeys' third album, and the last before he changed his co-arranger. In style it sits alongside "Hot buttered Soul" and the "Isaac Hayes Movement", and to me is the most sophisticated of his early works. Hayes' rendition of Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love" is a teriffic mix of orchestra, jazz and rhythm sounds that stretches the original song out to something like 12 minutes. Right after this, comes a 15 minute plus combination of the Hayes penned "Ike's Mood" and "You've lost that Lovin' Feeling" - another mammoth track featuring the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. The other tracks are less inspiring, but still worthy. If I could only own one Isaac Hayes CD, I'd make it this one.

This release represents an interesting bridge between the monumental "Hot Buttered Soul" and the lush majesty of "Black Moses". All the early Isaac Hayes albums are worthy of purchase, it would be safe to say. Although he was doing a lot of cover versions, his interpretations were (almost without exception) the work of a genius arranger at the very top of his game.

"To Be Continued" starts off with the first "Ike's Rap", before leading into a fabulous rendition of "Our Day Will Come". Listen for the sublimely tasteful, almost John Barry-like orchestration. Up next is a great reading of Bacharach & David's "Look Of Love", which is extended into an eleven-minute groove complete with orchestra and wah-wah guitar. The original second side of the LP kicks off with the supreme "Ike's Mood". Subsequently sampled by Massive Attack, this is a quite stunning piece of music. Isaac Hayes showed what an extraordinary arranger he was by fusing a blazing horn chart, thundering bass line and tasteful oboe/piano into a sensational instrumental. It leads into his excellent version of "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling", to form a +/- fifteen-minute suite. The more subdued "Running Out Of Fools" brings the album to a very satisfying close. And there you have it. Not a duff track in sight. And a record which would make the perfect backdrop to the perfect romantic evening. Go on, treat yourself.

Having made an amazing album in The Issac Hayes Movement which combines both ballads and upbeat material, Hayes decides to repeat the formula here with this album. You could say why not, especially after the success of the Issac Hayes Movement CD. The problem is, from my point of view, some of the ballads like Our Day will Come and Running Out of fools sound really mournful but i feel he'd been there done that on the previous album where it had worked well. The more interesting tracks on this album are "Ike's Mood" and "You've lost that Lovin' Feeling" and Hayes' rendition of Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love". in which he experiments with his funky, jazz, rhythmic orchestra effect very effectivley. My advice is therefore to approach with some caution.

Worthy of the purchase price alone, 'To Be Continued...' includes two of Black Moses' greatest recordings, his take on 'You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling' arguably transcended by its instrumental precursor, 'Isaac's Moods'. Both pieces are among Hayes' greatest achievements as an orchestrator, the use of horn and string sections creating plenty of atmosphere and colour, both sassy and sexy.
If the remainder of the album doesn't quite live up to these high standards, that shouldn't discourage anyone with even a passing interest in Hayes' music for whom this album will be indispensible. Put simply it contains Hayes' most spectacular 12 minutes or so on disc, ahead even of the dazzling "Joy".
