A lively, accessible introduction to the Chichewa language, 4 Mar 2002

This review is from: Tiyeni!: Chichewa Language Course for Newcomers to Malawi (Paperback)
'Tiyeni!' is a beginner's guide to Chichewa, the main Bantu language of Malawi.
I've found the book very helpful - it contains useful phrases, dialogues and vocabulary (as well as grammar exercises for those who want to learn more). It contains a wordlist too, which has helped me enormously, considering that it's hard to get hold of a decent dictionary. Finally, throughout the book there are references to local culture and customs. This is invaluable, as it helps you to put your language skills into context.
I'd definitely recommend 'Tiyeni!', for anyone travelling through Malawi or moving there more permanently.
(There is an audio-cassette available - however I had to look elsewhere for this. The book is fine on its own if you can find a Chichewa speaker to correct your pronunciation!)
