It's been a very long time since E-Z Rollers last album, the superb 'Weekend World'. In the intervening years, drum & bass virtually dropped off the map as a commercial proposition, before storming back in a new poptastic form through the likes of Kosheen and Shy FX & T Power. E-Z Rollers were one of the first to actually score a d & b hit, albeit by accident, with the anthemic 'Walk This Land' from Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.
'Titles of the Unexpected' seems to be a pretty determined effort to capture this new pop market, laden as it is with vocal tracks, a couple of Garage efforts and a radio-friendly sheen. The problem is, it isn't very good. The pop tracks aren't particularly memorable (which is pretty much an essential requirement for pop), and the garage tracks are, frankly, irritating. Even the drum and bass rollers sound tired and cliched. Anyone searching for another 'Retro' here, will come away disappointed.
All in all, it's a bit of a mess, which is a shame. For newbies out there, I thoroughly recommend 'Weekend World' as one of the best albums the genre has to offer. Their 'Dimensions of Sound' album is also excellent. This time they've come unstuck, I'm afraid.
