Book Description

17 Oct 1998
The RMS Titanic was supposedly unsinkable, but in the early hours of 15 April 1912 this newest flagship of the White Star Line sank with great loss of life. Using many previously unpublished photographs, letters and oral histories, "Titanic Voices" is a recreation of the sinking of the great ship, reliving the events through the first-hand accounts of those who were actually there.

I was born and brought up in Southampton and had many relatives who went to sea, including two who were in the crew of the Titanic and died in the disaster. This book is the first one I have seen which has such a personal slant on the people of Southampton who largely provided the crew. I recognized the location of almost every one of the many excellent photographs. The local social history aspect was fascinating too, but sometimes heartbreaking, for example when reading the letters from the crew to their friends and family, and the photographs of the crowds desperate for news outside the White Star office. If your family comes from Southampton this book will really touch your heart.

I pruchased this book in Decemner 98, as I was spellbound by the film Titanic. After reading it, it was only then I realised how much people suffered, and how brave some of the men were, knowing that they were going to die. It make me think how many of us today would stand there and watch all the life boats go and just accept you were not going to survive.
This book has everything anyone wanted to know about the disaster, without being disrecpectful or biased to one cause.
It certainly tought me a thing or two.
