In this book two young couples battle against emotions, parents, and friends to get to each other, all while the great ship Titanic sinks around them and they loose those close to them through the great disaster. The main characters are 1st class passengers Elizabeth and Max and 3rd class passengers Katie and Paddy. Both couples are forced together unexpectedly. Elizabeth and Max meet as the son and daughter of friends, Max is disapproved of by Elizabeth's parents because he has left his rich parents and become a poor painter, the trouble is Elizabeth wants to go to college before getting married, Elizabeth's parents don't agree and think Elizabeth might be encouraged by Max. Katie and Paddy meet when Paddy's brother is asked to look after Katie on the voyage. Katie believes that Paddy could never love her because he could have some one better than her and Paddy believes that Katie and his brother are in love with each other, so doesn't tell Katie how he feels. It's a right muddle. This is a classic Romance with all the aspects you would expect but without being slushy. This book could be read by anyone of the age 10-14. This is an excellent story because it has everything: romance, tragedy and adventure all rolled into one book. I truly couldn't put this book down once I'd picked it up, it was so exciting. I thought this book was absolutely brilliant the only trouble was that some of the characters died but that made it all the more believable that this actually happened, because there were very few families which stayed intact during this disaster.

Diane Hoh hit all the right targets with this book. What happens:
17 year-old Elizabeth Farr is a spoiled, wealthy girl, who is expected by her parents to go through a debut and then marry a banker, who is a "decent sort but missing a spine." on the Titanic, she meets Max Whittaker who is a poor artist, that got a 1st class ticket thanks to his grandmother. Kathleen(Katie) Hanrahan is a 16 year-old Irish girl who is immigrating to America to become a singer. Traveling with her are 2 brothers, Steady and dependable Brian Kelleher, who is going to Wisconsin to farm and his younger, attractive brother Patrick(Paddy), who is going to New York to be a writer. On the trip, Elizabeth tries to get her parents to change their minds and let her go to Vasser College. Max understands her and helps her, and in the process, discover their feelings for eachother. Meanwhile in 3rd class, Kathleen also discovers unknown feelings for Paddy, even though she knows how many broken hearts Paddy had left back home. Paddy thinks Katie really loves Brian, who happens to meet a Swedish girl himself. But Katie knows she truely loves Paddy.
When the iceberg hits, all 5 of the chracters' lives are put on the line. Elizabeth can't bear to leave both her father and Max behind on the sinking ship, and Katie finally convinces Paddy that she loves him. Who will survive? All I'm saying is, I'm not telling!

This book has every thing you want in it-Romance, tradegy, adventure and tension. Sometimes I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! If you're aged 10 to about 18/19 (depending on what books you like) you should like this. I certainly did! I cried at points because it was very moving. I felt like I knew the characters, and when they lost a loved one, a relative or friend,I felt sorry for them, as if they were alive right now. Sometimes I wished that in parts people could have stayed alive, because it's like I want the characters to be happy. The main characters were:Elizabeth,Max,Katie and Paddy. It should get the most reluctant reader to read! I think the prologue was very moving, in way I expected it to say something else. I felt like I didn't want it to end, because I wanted to see what happend to them in America. The epilogue did tell me that, but I would be extra happy if a second book came out saying what Elizabeth, Max,Katie and Paddy did with their lives in detail. So if you know Diane Hoh, please tell her that I would dearly love another book to come out about Elizabeth Farr,Max Whittaker,Katie Harahan and Paddy Kelleher! This is a must read book!

I must admit I’m not a big reader and the only reason I bought this book was because I had seen and loved the film Titanic and I was going on holiday and needed something. But I never once regretted it and found myself staying around the pool longer just so I could keep reading. I really connected with the characters and the story line was great. I never thought it was possible to cry with a book but this one had me reaching for the tissues with sadness and joy. This is a definite read if you are into the history of the Titanic and even if your not you will be hooked to the love stories within. I have now read this book 3 times and every time it brings new emotions. (Look out for the sequel REMEMBERING THE TITANIC which is just as great).

Diane Hoh really captures the readers interest in this excellent book. The story of two couples who fall in love and fight to stay together, and all this happens between the few days in which the Titanic is above water! I must have read this book over and over again, but I still love the suspence of what is to happen. I can remember the first time I read it, I so badly wanted to turn to the back pages, but I stopped myself and I was so glad I did!! A truly exciting book! WELL WORTH READING!!!!
