Product Description

Everyone thought the RMS Titanic was the safest ship in the world: a leading shipbuilding journal proclaimed it 'unsinkable' because of its watertight compartment design. On its first trip from England to New York City, it collided with an iceberg in the middle of the North Atlantic. The much-publicized 'unsinkable' watertight compartment design was never designed to cope with such extensive damage, and the ship starts to go down. Even worse, more than half the 2200+ passengers & crew on board are already doomed, as the Titanic is only carrying lifeboats for about 1200. This is the frightening and untold story of the passengers & crew's struggles to stay alive on the ill-fated liner s maiden voyage. Isabella Paradine (Catherine Zeta Jones) is a wealthy woman mourning the loss of her aunt, who reignites a romance with old flame, Wynn Park (Peter Gallagher). Meanwhile, a charming ne'er do well named Jamie Perse (Mike Doyle) steals a ticket for the ship, and falls for a sweet innocent Irish girl on board. But their romance is threatened by the villainous Simon Doonan (Tim Curry), who has discovered about the ticket and makes Jamie his unwilling accomplice, as well as having sinister plans for the girl. Director Robert Lieberman and scripter s Ross Lamanna and Joyce Eliason easily convey tension as the great ocean liner approaches what we know to be certain doom. EMMY Award winning production: 100th Anniversary Edition contains 2 Discs - LIMITED EDITION 3D outer sleeve design & replica memorabilia including: 1. Distress call telegram 2. Workers Union letter of Condolences 3. White Star Line poster - 'The Queen of the Ocean'

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better 3 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
I have some problems with this movie. The acting is fine but the actors have been let down by a poor script which can be corny in places. This movie however is one of the first to accurately depict Titanic splitting in two as it sank, and that is a plus. The special effects are also quite good. My main problem with this film however, is Tim Curry's Simon Doonan part, yes it is fiction but his role does not make this film good for family viewing. Take out that storyline and I would actually have enjoyed the film a lot more, the story of Titanic is dramatic enough without adding this role. Some of the casting was inspired George C. Scott portraying Captain Smith was enjoyable but Marilu Henner as Molly Brown was wrong, she is just to delicate to pull off the role of the rather butch Molly Brown. In summing up I am however glad I saw this film flaws and all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad 17 July 2008

I'm a huge fan of Catherine Zeta Jones, and liked her very much in this role.Personally,I thought the effects could have been much better.Of course, the finale in James Cameron's film was tremendous. Here,it was somewhat disappointing.I've read real life survivors accounts from the doomed ship, and some of it has been written into the script.Best part for me personally was Peter Gallagher literally forcing his girl into the few available lifeboats. It still shocks me today though, how so many people lost their lives on that ill fated voyage.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Attempt at a Legendary Subject 15 Aug 2009
Format:DVD
While this is no James Cameron blockbuster, or even another "Night to Remember", Robert Lieberman's "Titanic" does a decent enough job at telling the legend of this terrible tragedy. Some of the newer revelations about the sinking that have come to light since the wreck, such as the ship breaking in two before it sank and the events that conspired to bring about the collision with the iceberg are also portrayed, which should keep Titanic fans happy. Catherine Zeta-Jones brings a real presence to the film and George C. Scott adds a tragic gravitas as Captain Smith.

My main problem with this film (and the reason I am only awarding it two stars) is the plot line concerning an over-the-top crooked steward (played by a usually brilliant actor Tim Curry) and what I consider to be a gratuitous rape scene in a shower that spoils an otherwise decent and very watchable film.

A worthy alternative to de Caprio version and well worth viewing - you'll need the mandatory box of tissues though!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Titanic 22 Jun 2007
Format:DVD
If youve seen the James Cameron epic which may i add is superb, and your a Titanic fan like myself then you will love this. i found i loved the interior shots of the Titanic, and theres more about the time spent on the ship before it hits the Iceberg rather than after, The actors are excellent what can yo say about Catherine Zeta Jones, shes a great Actress, the movie is from the TV series which ran for weeks its a good story from begining to end with a twist. I really like this version the best of all i think for the sceens on the ship, highly recomended. i would by this, i own it and would never part with my dvd, Steve Lindsey

No film will ever rival James Cameron's epic masterpiece but this does come close in some respects. There's some good acting here amongst the cringe worthy accents. The effects aren't, obviously, in the same league as the 1997 cinema released version but are passable. Barry Pepper has a supporting, uncredited - in the opening credits - role. A strikingly handsome looking Peter Gallagher is wonderfully on the money and a just pre super stardom Catherine Zeta Jones shines in a tragic role. At a whopping 2 hours and 49 minutes it hardly ever drags. The opening credits are well done. Worth watching for the dodgy effects alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Titanic - Catherine Zeta-Jones
As a story it's much less about the ill-fated ship than about the luscious Ms Z-J, whose charms have added an extra star to the film rating...
