5.0 out of 5 stars Great inforamtion that's rarely heard, 24 Feb 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Titanic (Paperback)
This book wonderfully presents information that is rarely available; that is, what happened *after* the Titanic sank, and how the incident affected society on both sides of the Atlantic. I've always been a Titanic afficianado, and much of this was news to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-have volume for Titanic scholars, 7 Jan 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Titanic (Paperback)
This book concentrates on the US Senate investigation of the Titanic disaster. Mr. Wade promotes, and perhaps inflates, the part played by Senator William Smith in the entire Titanic epic, but his book is a well-researched account of the American reaction to the tragedy. Mr. Wade is a member of the Titanic Historical Society, and this book was produced with the Society's support. A must-have for every student of the Titanic.

This review is from: Titanic (Paperback)
Stripping the Titanic saga of much of its romantic nonsense, this carefully researched book is without doubt one of the very best of the many I have read on the ill-fated liner. Instead of rehashing old ground, Wade's meticulous research helps to cast new light not only on the disaster but on the society into which the Titanic was born. Unlike others who either ignore Senator Smith's Senate inquiry or write him off as a buffoon, this book shows just how much seafarers in the years following the disaster owed to him and his efforts. A great book - and oh yes, do ignore the rather garish cover picture which shows the Titanic foundering with smoke billowing from all four funnels. Even newcomers to the subject know that the aftermost stack was a dummy! Whether you are an avid Titanic fan or have only a passing interest, this book is a must!
