Product Description

Often dubbed "The Welsh Springsteen" , Martyn Joseph unveils his unique and passionate interpretations of 17 songs by The Boss - rarely heard gems peppered with milestone classics. Acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic, Joseph's strong vocals , skilled guitar and harmonica playing inject new life into some of the lesser known Springsteen "blue collar life" songs, peppered with a handful of stripped back takes on classics like 'Thunder Road', 'Badlands' and 'The Rising'. 'Tires Rushing By In The Rain' features a CD booklet introduction by acclaimed Springsteen biographer and American music critic Dave Marsh.

You know you must have balls of steel to think you can take on America's greatest songwriter's best songs and come out with any credibility. Either that or you might just be the wrong side of sane such is the esteem his music is rightly held in. So MJ has surely bitten off more than he can chew here hasn't he? No one and I mean NO ONE, touches Thunder Road and gets out of here alive...or do they? The thing is he's only gone and done it hasn't he? This record sounds fresh, earthy, touching, melodic and just a little bit cute in its approach. You see brilliant performer that The Boss is, if he has a weakness then its in his somewhat muffled(at times) vocal delivery(Okay relax now Bosites he's still The Boss). One of MJ's strengths though is his voice, soulful, lilting, seductive (in a manly way of course), passionate and moving. So in the production of this album he has stripped down the songs and majored on the vocal delivery and you know what it works. In fact it not merely works, it amazes! Now I can actually sing along to Badlands and hear every word!
Obviously there is no filler here as you don't plunder Bruce's back catalogue and come up with a duff song so every one's a winner baby! One or two tracks don't quite grip me as much as others yet remain highly polished and credible but a few actually surpass the original in my humble opinion. If you are a fan of either artist then buy this album and within 3 plays you'll be hooked. Oh and by the way, Thunder Road comes out of this very well. Thank you for listening.

This is a excellent interpretation of some of Springsteens best songs.
The clarity of the lyrics from Martyn is first class and the sound quality is up with the best, with just Martyn and his guitar right there in your living room.
I should say I love both of these great songwriters, but the sparse sound of this recording seems to suit these songs perfectly.
Highly recommended.

I've seen Martyn Joseph over the years, spoken to him, but most of all heard and enjoyed his amazing music. He is one of the great songwriters, and has over the years produced some truly excellent albums, and he's one of the finest artists Britain has, and you wonder why he's not as big as the Boss. Just listen to another album similar to this new one in 'Evolved' to see what I mean by his incredible songwriting talent. Here though is something rare Martyn recording someone elses songs, and its no less than the Boss he's chosen for this collection. As a massive fan of Bruce's I must admit I wondered when I recieved an e-mail a while back that this release was coming. I need never have worried, like 'Evolved' its jusy Martyn and his guitar. It needs no more, like Bruce he has a superb voice and these songs fit him like a glove.Doing it this way the depth and quality of the lyrics really do breath through every one of the 17 generous songs in this set. Martyn sure has done the odd Bruce song on his live shows, and they've proved very popular, and this five star set shows why.
Very rare for him to do covers, and certainly the first set of this type he's put out, his guitar is so full throughout, the songs flow, the lyrics so clear, you must think Bruce would enjoy thgis himself, and hopefully mention it on his website or the fan magazine.A release I believe many Bruce and Martyn fans will really enjoy over and over again.

I was not going to buy this, as I am not usually a fan of covers. I bought it, I listened. I am SO glad I did.

Martyn Joseph is one the hardest working musicians in Britain. This collection of songs is his best yet. Shows great artistry and subtlety. Would heartily recommend.

As a long term Springsteen fan, or obsessive depending on who you ask, I have heard many artists interpret the Bosses music but rareloy have I heard it done so well, Martyn Joseph is new to me and I understand he has been referred to as the Welsh Springsteen. It is true he does have a similar vocal range but he treats these songs as his own and not as reverential covers. He understands the meaning and lyrics and his guitar work is exceptionaly good. Martyn has gone out of his way to make the songs his own whilst remaining connected to the originals. What I'm trying, very clumsily, to do is articulate in words the feeling you get from this album. I would actually love Springsteen to do a genuine unplugged album of his own E Street songs. If it was as good as this he would be well pleased.
