Medieval Conspiracy! 10 April 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was attracted to this movie mainly because I like Medieval sagas and the because lovely Jane Asher has a rare movie appearance in this Spanish historical adaptation.

Tirante El Blanco is a Spanish knight, who in the year 1401 travels with his small army to Constantinople where he is to assist the aged Emperor in his war against the invading Turks...

Tirante soon lives up to his reputation, defeating a far larger Turkish army and saving Constantinople from immediate danger.

He and his Lieutenants are treated as heroes, and Tirante falls in love with the Emperor's beautiful daughter. This love is recipricated, but as Tirante is not a nobleman a marriage seems out of the question.

However as her brother was killed in battle there is no legitimate heir to the throne and a marriage to Tirante seems a pefect solution... but the Turkish leader has also offered his own hand in exchange for a peace between the two warring factions.

Her two chief handmaidens plot to achieve their own goals... the first wishes her to marry Tirante, the other the Turkish leader... and both attempt to influence her into their respective desires...

This movie's plot is full of twists and turns as Tirante is pulled one way and then the other between duty and love. There are some exquisite sets and costumes with a couple of spectacular battles filmed in slow motion to grab the viewers attention.

Jane Asher also has a substantial role as the schemeing Empress, who seducess one of Tirante's young officers for her own gratification...

In all this is quite a long, but rewarding movie, leading to an inevitable conclusion.

The European Region 2 DVD can be viewed in English without subtitles, and it seems that it was filmed both in this language and Spanish for an anticipated wider release. Sadly that did not happen, but Tirante is well worth hunting down and is a must for any Jane Asher fan as she looks far more beautiful and sexy than any other girls in the court half her age...

A good movie with some attractive actors and good battles... recommended.

With both English and Spanish dialogue this is difficult to follow, but the other review has given the storyline. It is a good movie, made great by young naked pretty things and Jane Asher naked at around 58-ish (?).

An entertaining film adaptation of a classic Catalan novel written in 1490, by veteran filmmaker Vicente Aranda (who was 80 when he directed this). In the 15th century, a Catalan knight arrives in Constantinople to help the Byzantine emperor fend off a Turkish invasion. Meanwhile, he is starting receiving the advances of various women of the court, but he himself has fallen for Carmesina, the beautiful daughter of the emperor (in real history, of course, Constantinople was taken by the Turks in 1453, but neither the novel nor the film follows history very closely).

Delightful and erotic, this medieval bedroom farce is helped by the various beautiful actresses around, who are always ready to show themselves in different states of undress, though always with taste, including the beautiful Esther Nubiola as Carmesina, but also Ingrid Rubio and Leonor Watling as two of the maidens, and even two veterans as Victoria Abril and Jane Asher. In the title role of Tirant, however, Caspar Zafer delivers a poor, almost expressionless, performance.
