A la Simon and Garfunkel, these two singer songwriters re-released this album in 1992 to co-incide with a few annual Tir na nOg revival gigs in and around Dublin. The band name, and album namesake is Irish for Land of Youth. This refers to a mythological land of eternal youth, to where famous Irish warriors traveled after death. Out of the thirteen songs, Sonny Condell's: 'Time is Like a Promise' and 'Our Love Will not Decay' are capable of transporting the listener back into misty arthurian times. Leo O'Kelly's 'Daisy Lady' is a simple but rare timeless love melody. For a live Tir na nOg gig, there is always an uncommon quietness among the aficionados of these irregularly held events. In very recent times the solo albums of Condell and O'Kelly manage to maintain the high level of artistic richness in their singer-songwriting craft.

Tir Na Nog presented an Irish Incredible-String-Band image as multi-instrumentalists weaving inticate tunes with themes from Celtic mythology and gentle visions of the sea and countryside...it was another time, of course, but it is good to have these lovely songs preserved on CD. "Time is Like a Promise", "Boat Song", and "Dante" are gorgeous; the melodies take you right back to a more leisurely era. Sonny and Leo are both fine singers and guitarists; the additional instrumentation (tablas, whistles, various stringed instruments) is not overdone but contributes to a very pleasant overall sound. Less adventurous than the String Band, less quirky than Dr Strangely Strange, but hugely enjoyable.

Tir na nOg is/was two excellent musicians from Ireland (Sonny Condell and Leo O'Kelly) who charmed the University circuit in Britain, Ireland,Holland etc during the 1970's with a wonderful collection of original, melodious and memorable songs that will linger in the brain for centuries. In those days our brains did last for centuries!! This is their best album but 1 or 2 others are well worth a listen also. Lay back, listen, share it, protect it, enjoy it.
