More About the Author

Paul Mendelson wrote stories at school when he should have been doing other things, but went on to become the, then, youngest ever playwright performed at the National Theatre, with his play, "You're Quite Safe With Me". This was followed by further work for theatre and, briefly, for television.
For over twenty years, Paul has written on mind sports, such as bridge, poker and casino games, becoming the UK's best-selling author within his genre. He has contributed to magazines and newspapers worldwide, has a weekly bridge column in the Financial Times, and also writes interviews and features.
His debut crime novel, "The First Rule of Survival" was published in 2014, shortlisted for the CWA Crime Novel of the Year, and hit the best-seller charts. His next novel, "The Serpentine Road" is out on 6th April 2015, once again featuring Vaughn de Vries. Novel number three will follow in 2016. Set in Southern Africa, the novels have allowed his creative writing once again to come to the fore, translated into numerous languages, and with much-admired results.

Paul lives in London (and, sometimes, Cape Town) with his two and four-legged family.

This title is up to paul's usual high standards.Although a book of this type could always find additional tips to include, nevertheless the wealth of information present cannot fail to improve your standard of play.

Having started to play duplicate bridge again after a 25 year lapse I found the 121 tips very interesting but knew that I would not remember all of them. Bought a copy to enable me to get up to date with the changes in bidding systems and to learn from an expert over a short period of time and it works well for me.

The Kindle version of this otherwise excellent book is virtually unreadable. The hand diagrams are included as graphics and therefore don't enlarge with the font. That wouldn't be so bad if they were a readable size in the first place. They are not: they are tiny. Unless and until this is fixed this book (in it's Kindle edition) gets a one-star rating. Don't buy it, buy the print version (which I would probably rate 4 or 5 stars based on the Kindle sample)

Edit: OK I bought the paperback edition and that is a definite 5* for Acol players, at least four-and-a-half for Precision players, too - most of the tips still apply :)

Some 'Yeah I knew that, and I already do it', many 'Hmm, good explanation'; a couple of dozen 'Must discuss that with my partner, see if we can incorporate' and only a very few that I was either too stupid to get or plain disagreed with. Written in such bite-sized chunks you can even read it on the train, unlike most bridge books.

This is a useful aide memoire to key advice from his other books. In many cases, the examples are in more depth. It is a book for regular, competent players.

I have a number of Bridge books but this one is outstanding. Before (or even after) a Bridge game when I have some doubts about a particul;ar topic it is a very easy reference guide without having to wade through chapters of print. It is also an excellent learning aid as individual topics are so easy to access. I have found it very useful for a partnership who do not live close to each other when both of us reading a particular chapter can put us back on track if we have any uncertanties. It is much better value than many more expensive tomes. Do buy this book!
