Tippett was a sprightly 80 something when he recorded these performances but it has to be said that despite all those years conducting amateurs at Morley College and elsewhere, he was not a great conductor.
The Ritual Dances lack the dramatic tension that the hunting scenarios demand and the whole thing only catches fire (appropriately) when the finale approaches.
Nonetheless this is a wonderful document; Hodgson's Sosostris is magisterial and the seminal Birthday Suite is given a charming run through.
Definitely a good place to start getting to know Tippett who is in danger of being known only for "Child of Our Time".
