8 of 8 people found the following review helpful By John Ferngrove TOP 500 REVIEWER on 5 Aug. 2008
Format: Audio CD
I have chosen to review this set as it would appear to be the only way now left by which to acquire the sublime Byzantium, as performed by Solti, the Chicago Symphony and the majectic Faye Robinson.

The first disc comprises Tippett songs which I am in no position to comment on as they are some of the few Tippett items I do not own and know. A situation I will most certainly remedy.

The second disc gives us A Child of our Time, probably Tippett's most popular and performed work. Ironically so in my opinion because this is representative of the earliest era of Tippett's career when arguably he had yet to find the utterly distinctive voice and commence the journey to the most refined individuality that would eventually define him. The overwhelming humanitarianism is undoutably what has given this work its reputation, and its punctuation with several negro spirituals I suppose did signal a certain iconoclasm.

The third disc gives us some more songs, including the strange and difficult Songs for Dov that carry on certain themes from the third opera, the Knot Garden (the content of disc 4).

The last half of the third disc is Byzantium and for me the truly oustanding item in the set. It's a theory of mine that Tippett's championing by Carl Davis has been a double edged thing. On the one hand Tippett has always had the assurance that his works would reach the public, but on the other it is generally the case that Davis has never really got his players to do the works justice and is somewhat responsible for Tippett's dubious reputation. It has usually taken younger men, fo example David Atherton and Richard Hickox, to give us the truly penetrating performances that show the materpieces for what they are.
