Wi Ile Anpo is a girl born to Lakota warrior, Wanbli Zi. But the tribal shaman has a vision that Anpo is wicakte - a two-souled person embodying both male and female spirits. She will become a great warrior and a great asset to her people. During a vision quest, Anpo finds that her life will be intertwined with the lives of a sacred white buffalo and a pale skinned woman with yellow hair, yet both will be wounded by her actions. Kathleen McGlashan Stevens has been captured by renegade Indians, and thrust into a terrifying and foreign culture where she must learn to survive. The sacred white buffalo brings Anpo and Kathleen together. As their relationship develops, Anpo wonders: Can she change her destiny, or is she fated to wound the woman she loves?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and well researched 'uber' book 4 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book comes in a now long line of 'uber-Xena' fiction. This is a well-written story about Anpo, a Lakota native American and her growing love for Kathlin, a white captive.
D. Jordan Redhawk developed a stong, cliche-free plot in an superbly fluid style. This is completed by vivid, well-researched details on the Lakota culture.
A very good read indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars It makes you want to go live with the Lakota 18 Jun 2003
By E. Jean Alston - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
It is a look into the lives of the Lakota Indian tribe. They are a beautiful and innocent people. One child's destiny leads her to be trained as a warrior. The warrior's destiny is linked to a white buffalo and a strange woman with pale skin and golden hair. It is a story of true love, honor and integrity. It is also a story of sadness and hurt. It will make you cry, but you will enjoy every minute of it! (Not to mention that some of the first part had me laughing out loud)

It is a love story between two wonderful people who just happen to both be women. And if that makes it a "lesbian romance" then I guess that's what you would call it. But it is NOTHING like any "lesbian romance" you ever read, I guarantee it! It is mostly a story about a people (the Lakota).

If you're looking for a story with steamy sex, this is not the book for you. But if you are looking for a wonderful love story, look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite 26 Nov 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is an absolutely beautiful story. Redhawk makes the Native American culture come alive in rich detail, treating their traditions and religion with profound respect. The character of Anpo is one of my favorites in fiction. She is both a warrior and a woman of peace, fiercely honorable and loyal to her family and tribe. The plot is engaging, the writing assured and the characters memorable. This is a book I will read numerous times ... and have already.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Story 9 Nov 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
D. Jordan Redhawk successfully weaves romance and historical fiction in this wonderfully written tale. I was drawn in from the very first pages and my interest never wavered. I found myself truly caring what happened to these rich, vibrant characters. The backdrop of Native American culture and early frontier life served to add even more depth to a very solid plot and believable characterizations. I would highly recommend it to anyone!
