I stumbled across this little gem the other day while on Amazon. It was a bit of an impulse buy at first but has since turned into one of my favorite reads this month. "The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories" is a collaborative work of (very) short stories by members of the website Hitrecord ([...]) which is directed by actor and artist Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, 50/50 etc). This highly enjoyable collection of stories and illustrations range from the fanciful to the profound. One page finds a curious King Midas another the "chance" encounter between Fate and Coincidence. My particular favorite begins "just before I died my life passed before my eyes..." (pg 24) which accompanies a stunning illustration of a person in shadow surrounded by lines, the placement of which suggest the inside of an eye. Each story is left up to the interpretation of the reader which gives this collection a quasi-creative-writing-workshop feel to it, making the English major in me smile and cringe at times.
Witticisms and cutesy images of eggs and oranges aside the endearing thread that binds this collection together is the obvious love and care of the writers and artists who contributed to this work. Each page is a testament to the purity of the creative process and that is something to be celebrated. Here is a work of art by mostly anonymous (and perhaps first time) artisans in an effort to spread the idea of collaborative creation, a refreshing concept that is perhaps somewhat foreign to the current climate of me me me but which reminds us of the enduring need (as writers, readers, and everyone in between) to tell stories. Simple stories of life.
