There is the occasional funny or original part in this book but to be honest I couldn't wait to get it finished because there is so much emphasis on banal observations that try to be surreal but just feel forced. I always feel that if someone trying to be surreal refers to bananas or fish in what they write or say they aren't really being original or funny. This is more a book for that quality time spent in the littlest room in the house- normally when I finish a book it takes a lot of thought before I decide whether to keep it for future rereading or send it to the charity shop pile- this was straight on the pile as soon as the last page was turned. There was so much potential for humour and actual well thought out tiny acts of rebellion- however in most cases I could guess what the content of each section would be. Disappointing.

This book was bought as a gift but I read it on the train and found myself snickering away with devilish delight.
Writing about such a subject as 'stick[ing] it to the man' risks the author sounding bitter and twisted, but Rich just comes across as hilariously manic and irrepressibly entertaining.
Mr Fulcher would make a good house pet if only you could afford him, buy his book instead.
