Biography

Brighton-based Kate Walsh has been variously compared to Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Jane Austen. Any fans of The Sundays' Harriet Wheeler will be beguiled by her pure vocal style and heartfelt lyrics. Ferociously independent in every sense, Kate is not your typical singer/songwriter - she adores Debussy, studies the cello, bemoans the demise of vinyl and CDS in the download age (she finally… Read more in Amazon's Kate Walsh Store

Product Description

BBC Review

Kate Walsh has certainly become a pin-up of the 'digital age'. After her song 'Talk Of The Town' was iTunes' Free Single of the Week back in March, this album (her second) shot straight to No 1 on the UK iTunes chart - knocking veterans Take That from the top spot. She went from bedroom singer to 'the next big thing' almost overnight, and although she's never going to be as big as Joni Mitchell (who people insist on comparing her to), Tim's House is pleasantly surprising. She does have a lovely, soft voice and there are definitely some highlights that would make me listen to it again.

If you're a sucker for harmonies there are plenty of good ones on offer here - both 'Your Song' and 'Talk Of The Town' are full of them and get the album off to a relaxing start. On the latter there's even a hint of accordion which is nice to hear - an instrument that certainly doesn't get enough airtime on mainstream radio!

'Is This It?' and 'Don't Break My Heart' are a trifle dull but 'Betty' is a great song, reminiscent of Nick Drake and definitely one for a cosy night in when it's cold and wintry outside. However, 'Goldfish' would have made a better ending for the record than the slightly forgettable 'Fireworks', which leaves you feeling a bit despondent and disappointed.

Ms Walsh is only in her early twenties and still developing her style; she undoubtedly has more to offer. Put it this way, if you wandered into your local pub to listen to some live music on a rainy Sunday night and she came on, you'd be glad you'd heaved yourself off the sofa and gone out, but you wouldn't necessarily want to stay until the end. --Lizzie Ennever

Album Description

After a 'lost' album on Kitchenware, here is the debut album
proper from Kate Walsh, a new singer-songwriter who is already causing a
stir at Radio 2. Counting Ravel and Debussy as a key influences on her
melodies, and also learning from Joni Mitchell and Talk Talk, Kate has
created a soothing, richly sensual work. 'Tim's House' is an admirable
contribution to the quiet revolution. Packing heart-stoppingly beautiful
songs - (if 'Your Song' doesn't move you, we respectively suggest you check
your pulse) - the album has maturity and finesse way beyond Kate's years.
For all the subtle strings and unhurried grace of the guitar on 'Tim's
House', it's Kate's vocals that ultimately make it special - she sings with
the humanity of Katherine Williams and the soft bell-like clarity of The
Sundays' Harriet Wheeler while sounding like no one but herself. A record
of great heart and class.

This is a lovely album of original, thought-provoking, haunting songs which I has rarely left my CD player since I got it. In seeing Kate live last week, however, I realised if anything it perhaps doesn't do her justice - while her singing comes across as very pleasant on the album, in fact it is quite overwhelmingly beautiful when heard live. In the recordings here her voice is so held back and quiet I feel like she hasn't been allowed to use her full amazing vocal range. Secondly, the harmonies (Tim, I guess?) on many of the recorded versions actually seem to spoil the songs a bit, for me anyway.

So while I would completely recommend the album, I would even moreso recommend you to see her live, and hope that future recordings of the great new songs we heard at the gig might emphasise her vocal talent more than this album.

I saw Kate a few weeks back and like the other reviewer, have been on her Myspace page daily ever since. I've even been listening to snippets of the album on US iTunes where the the album is already available.

Suffice to say, I haven't heard a combination of voice, song and production like this in a very long time. Singer songwriters often rely on the voice as their main tool, but often the song, or melodies get left behind. In Kate's case, both parts carry equal strength and power.

Kate writes classic songs that could have been written anytime over the past 30 years. They're all timeless, and all have strong hooks and heartfelt lyrics.

Kate will be a big star...please tell your friends about this today!

Captivating. 11 Nov 2007

Tim's House is an modern acoustic folk album of exceptional talent with the tendency to understate rather than overstate, as such it is an album that takes time to fully appreciate (not that that's a bad thing).

Kate Walsh's vocal is somewhat reminiscent of Kate Rusby's voice in the way that is is clear and crisp with good diction, but also in the way it is an emotional voice.

Repeat listens have only served to increase my enjoyment of this quiet wonder.

Lovely gentle album
This is a lovely gentle album. It is not over cluttered with too much production, but I agree with an earlier comment that Kate's voice is a little too far back in the mix. Read more

Seriously, it's that intimate. As there's no track entitled Tim's House, you may wonder who Tim is: perhaps it's just coincidence that the producer's name is Tim. Read more
