Book Description

4 Feb 2010
Meet the mongrel. Timoleon Vieta. A deeply loyal, undemanding and loving companion ...with the most beautiful eyes. He's living an idyllic existence in the Italian countryside with Cockroft, a composer in exile. Until, that is, the mysterious and malevolent Bosnian comes to stay. How will the stranger affect the bond between dog and master? Timoleon Vieta Come Home is a free-wheeling take on the Lassie legend, deeply moving and hysterically funny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprised by all the negative reviews! 13 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
I borrowed this book from my public library, knowing nothing about it or the author besides what it said on the blurb.
Having finished the book I decided to see on Amazon what others thought of it (as I often do). I am surprised by the extreme negative comments that it has been given.
I found it a gripping read, which was funny, shocking, gruesome and moving in turn. I liked the plot device and although I did not empathise particularly with any of the characters found myself drawn into the story because of the different facets of love which the second part of the book illustrated so well.

Had never read anything by this author before but had read favourable reviews which encouraged me to purchase this. Lovely little story - pulls on the heartstrings of anyone who has or loves dogs.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you love dogs DO NOT read this book!! 1 July 2011
Format:Paperback
I have never felt strongly enough about a book to write a review but this book really had a deep impact on me. The cover includes such bold statements as 'hysterically funny' and 'a delight, a masterpiece of beautifully unforced comedy'. These statements are a little misleading to say the least. I actually enjoyed some of the book, I liked the short stories, they were mostly tragic but beautiful and I initially quite liked the main character Cockcroft. I felt the book was leading me to a happy satisying ending but the actual ending was more like a punch in the face. As a dog lover I found the violent end to Timoleon Vieta to be horrific, absolutely heartbreaking. I don't know if I was expected to feel happy for Cockcroft because he gets his happy ending, but I hated him in the end for what he did. I get that the author was probably trying to say something important/arty or make the reader 'feel' something or some other such rubbish but after feeling the negative emotions this book made me feel, it was NOT worth it. I would definitely not recommend this book to anyone who cares about animals, in fact I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who has a heart not made of ice. Depressing and unpleasant, AVOID!

5.0 out of 5 stars Weird but wonderful
Such an unusual book. Not the usual doggy diary, more the story of a remarkable little dog and how he impacts on the lives of various people he 'adopts'. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Difficult For Dog Lovers Maybe... I've Always Preferred Cats
