Timex Company Background

Timex History: During World War I, the US Army asked Timex to re-tool the Yankee pocket watch into a convenient new "wristwatch" for soldiers. In 1933, Timex produced the very first Mickey Mouse Clocks and watches, under an exclusive license from Walt Disney. Within just a few years, the company sold two million of these watches. In the 1950s came the introduction of the world's first inexpensive but reliable watch. Torture-test advertising campaigns promoted Timex watches with the tag-line: "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking."

Ever since watches moved from the pocket to the wrist, Timex has defined how the world tells time. For over 150 years, Timex has led the way providing affordable cutting-edge technology in trendsetting styles. For Timex, time began in 1854. Over the many years that followed, through wartime and peacetime, Timex watches have kept more than time: they've kept a promise of undaunted innovation.

Brand History

  • In 1986 Timex introduced the "Ironman Triathlon watch" that revolutionised sports timing with features and durability that were an instant hit with the dedicated athletes that inspired it. One of the most important ever introductions by Timex watches is the Indiglo backlight system. Invented by Timex in 1992, the Indiglo lamp uniformly lights the watch dial with a blue backlight, using Timex's unique leading electroluminescent technology.

  • Modern Day: Timex remain one of the only watchmakers in the world to manufacture all of their own movements. Timex Originals: paying homage to over 150 years of Timex heritage, the Timex Originals collection is inspired by vintage designs through-out the decades, brought up-to-date with a modern twist. Timex is proud to be the official timing sponsor of some of the greatest marathons in the world--New York, London and Berlin.

  • In 2011, Timex introduced the Timex Intelligence Quartz collection. Based on state of the art technology that is an open-ended platform with the flexibility to incorporate new technologies, new functions and new ideas as they become available, Intelligence Quartz is a design and technology platform targeted primarily to the male consumer seeking a sophisticated yet technology driven timepiece.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good everyday watch 12 Jan 2011
By Andrew
I bought this rather than pay for another battery to be fitted to another, more expensive watch, which would have cost almost as much when taking into account postage etc. Its a good everyday watch, more cheerful than many given the white face and orange detailing, which is sufficently robust to take the inevitable knocks. Waterproof too, so no problem keeping on when swimming etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great watch for diving or work. 30 July 2013
I am a bit of a watch collecter, but work as a courier so need something relatively cheap that I can bash about a bit. I usually wear a G-Shock for work but fancied a bit of a change, so I bought the Timex T5K200 from Argos at 39.99. I must say that despite this perhaps being marginally less tough than a G-Shock, I am very pleased with the watch for the following reasons. Firstly, I like the chunky style. It doesn't sit too high on the wrist but still looks very masculine. The build quality is good, although it's somewhat lighter than a G-Shock.

With respect to the digital display, you can choose to have the date or time on display, with just a push of the front button changing momentarily to the other. Hold it down for five seconds and it will change permanently. The digital display is quite unusual in that it changes colour depending on the light, if you angle the watch one way it will be browny grey, move it around a bit and it will be vivid green. Still easy to read though.

Unlike most combination watches which use two separate batteries for the analogue and digital display, this model uses only one battery. This is a positive for me, as I'm a bit of a perfectionist- synchronise the digital and analogue displays and they will STAY synchronised, to the second. So if you set the alarm for 7.30, it will start at 7:30:00, and not 7:30:04! I know this is probably a bit TOO anal for some people, but it's there if you want it!

The lume on the hour and minute hands is surprisingly good, and will probably be visible for an hour or so in complete darkness. Having said that, luminous hands are somewhat redundant in this model as it features an excellent EL light, which completely illuminates the analogue and digital display.

Well it was a present for a 12 year old. He loves the watch, particularly the light for the clock face. It works fine, I'd just add that it has a cheap feel, quite plasticy, but perfectly good nontheless.

for my husband for our 10th wedding anniversary. He is more than pleased with it and its functions, says its the most comfortable watch he has ever had and sometimes even forgets he is wearing it. High praise indeed.
