Timex Company Background

Timex History: During World War I, the US Army asked Timex to re-tool the Yankee pocket watch into a convenient new "wristwatch" for soldiers. In 1933, Timex produced the very first Mickey Mouse Clocks and watches, under an exclusive license from Walt Disney. Within just a few years, the company sold two million of these watches. In the 1950s came the introduction of the world's first inexpensive but reliable watch. Torture-test advertising campaigns promoted Timex watches with the tag-line: "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking."

Ever since watches moved from the pocket to the wrist, Timex has defined how the world tells time. For over 150 years, Timex has led the way providing affordable cutting-edge technology in trendsetting styles. For Timex, time began in 1854. Over the many years that followed, through wartime and peacetime, Timex watches have kept more than time: they've kept a promise of undaunted innovation.

Brand History

  • In 1986 Timex introduced the "Ironman Triathlon watch" that revolutionised sports timing with features and durability that were an instant hit with the dedicated athletes that inspired it. One of the most important ever introductions by Timex watches is the Indiglo backlight system. Invented by Timex in 1992, the Indiglo lamp uniformly lights the watch dial with a blue backlight, using Timex's unique leading electroluminescent technology.

  • Modern Day: Timex remain one of the only watchmakers in the world to manufacture all of their own movements. Timex Originals: paying homage to over 150 years of Timex heritage, the Timex Originals collection is inspired by vintage designs through-out the decades, brought up-to-date with a modern twist. Timex is proud to be the official timing sponsor of some of the greatest marathons in the world--New York, London and Berlin.

  • In 2011, Timex introduced the Timex Intelligence Quartz collection. Based on state of the art technology that is an open-ended platform with the flexibility to incorporate new technologies, new functions and new ideas as they become available, Intelligence Quartz is a design and technology platform targeted primarily to the male consumer seeking a sophisticated yet technology driven timepiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sports Watch! 22 Aug 2008
Don't be mislead by the low price of this watch: it may have all you need and more.
It certainly does for me: I bought it as a second watch for my "advance amateur" sports activities: cycling, running, swimming and sailing.
Design is very sleek and light, it sits comfortably on the wrist. Its sphere has a reasonable medium size, I would say this could be a unisex watch.
Two strong points:
- simplicity of use.
- display visibility: You can still see the display in the swimming pool through your goggles or at a glance while sprinting for example.

Operator's manual is virtually not needed since it has a very intuitive interface, including on-screen help texts for some functions.
It features:
>Date&time for 3 different time zones: With a push button you can simply check for a specific time zone or hold it a few Secs to set it as your current time. Very useful if you travel o communicate regularly with other countries.
> Cronograph: resolves 1/100 Sec and measures elapsed time: display can be configured to show Lap time or Split time, even after the measurements have been taken. You can recall up to 30 lap readings, but still you can take and see as many lap shots as you like, it will always remember only the last 30 though.
> Down-count timer: can be configured for single or continuous run. It will sound an alarm for 10sec every time time the counter reaches 0:00.
> Alarms: 3 different alarms, each one can be configured individually for weekdays, weekend or always.
> Reminder: You can setup a reminder, to sound at a given date and time.
> Backlight: is very sleek fluorescent type, and can be configured to auto-lit with the shake of your wrist.
> 100m waterproof. I personally never trust water resistance claims from watch manufacturers; however I subjected mine to several swimming sessions already (1 hour continuous crawl stroke) and had no problems so far.
> You can also disable the functions you do not use frequently to simplify your navigation through function menus (in mine I have disabled alarms 2 & 3 and the reminder, for example).
Overall a super performance watch if you do not want to spend too much, you cannot be wrong at that price.

4.0 out of 5 stars great and resilient sports watch 6 Oct 2010
I got this watch about 4 months ago to use while training (running) for my first 10k race. It is light, resilient and has been very useful so far. I have been wearing it while swimming during summer vacations, although one needs to be careful to not press buttons while under water (according to isntructions). Its function is really intuitive, so you can start using right out of the box. 30 lap memory is useful for the purpose. My only gripe (and the reason for 1 less star) is the use of the Timex's indiglo light, which is great in dark situations but does not help under low light situations when the LCD contrast is not sufficient. Other than that the display is readable. Overall the watch is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very impressed 30 Aug 2010
I was looking for a budget watch with a lap/split function for running. I initially settled on the 10 lap Timex Ironman, but the store (Argos) didn't have it in stock. I then looked at this model, being the next model up. It was discounted to [...] (so actually cheaper than the 10 lap model!) and is therefore excellent value for money given the very good features, usability and comfort. Highly recommended, if you can pick one up at less than the RRP.
