Timex Company Background

During World War I, the US Army asked Timex to re-tool the Yankee pocket watch into a convenient new "wristwatch" for soldiers. In 1933, Timex produced the very first Mickey Mouse Clocks and watches, under an exclusive license from Walt Disney. Within just a few years, the company sold two million of these watches. In the 1950s came the introduction of the world's first inexpensive but reliable watch. Torture-test advertising campaigns promoted Timex watches with the tag-line: "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking."

Ever since watches moved from the pocket to the wrist, Timex has defined how the world tells time. For over 150 years, Timex has provided affordable technology in distinctive designs. For Timex, time began in 1854. Over the many years that followed, through wartime and peacetime, Timex watches have kept more than time: they've kept a promise of progress.

Brand History

  • In 1986 Timex introduced the "Ironman Triathlon watch" that revolutionised sports timing with features and durability that were an instant hit with the dedicated athletes that inspired it. One of the most important ever introductions by Timex watches is the Indiglo backlight system. Invented by Timex in 1992, the Indiglo lamp uniformly lights the watch dial with a blue backlight, using Timex's electroluminescent technology.

  • Modern Day: Timex remain one of the few watchmakers in the world to manufacture all of their own movements. Timex Originals: paying homage to over 150 years of Timex heritage, the Timex Originals collection is inspired by vintage designs through-out the decades, brought up-to-date with a modern twist. Timex is proud to be the official timing sponsor of some of the greatest marathons in the world - New York, London and Berlin.

  • In 2011, Timex introduced the Timex Intelligence Quartz collection. Based on technology that is an open-ended platform with the flexibility to incorporate new technologies, new functions and new ideas as they become available, Intelligence Quartz is a design and technology platform targeted primarily to the male consumer seeking a sophisticated yet technology driven timepiece.

On holiday I mix boating, cycling and socialising. This watch is robust enough for the energetic activities and smart enough for the others. I bought it to to place a Casio model that was (I think) destined for the same market sector but did not 'look the part'. The Timex does - I would recommend it for adult use. Comments in other reviews about the length of the strap baffle me; it seems entirely adequate in my case.

This watch was purchased as a special treat for a child who had recently learnt to tell the time. It was a gift and the recipient was delighted with it. Despite the one, I received having had a somewhat tatty box.

The watch comes in a neutral colour and has a large face with big numbers; which are clear to read. The only issue is that the date can be found where the number '3' should be and this can be confusing for a child who is trying to gain confidence when telling the time and sees numbers above '12' on the watch (the date and time of day are in the same colour and font and almost of identical size).

Still the hands are flourescent and the whole face lights up in the dark - so reading it's well past your own bedtime is possible.

The strap is made of velcro so can be adjusted to fit a growing child's wrist but it would be better if it was made of plastic (as the watch is waterproof) so it doesn't need to be taken on and off: on and off all the time. Equally the straps can get dirty and cling on to dust/debris as your child is outside. Equally the band is somewhat uncomfortable especially if it does get wet.

The watch is clearly not for a man - the strap isn't long enough - but the face is large and it can look a bit cumbersome on a child's arm. Still I like its simple, sleek design. Actually I like it being big and the watch looks robust and that it won't break or easily get damaged. Good as boys tend to be a bit rough.....

All in all though it is a good watch at a reasonable price and from an average, well-known manufacturer. They are not outstanding and there are issues with the watch (where improvements could be made, that are simple and inexpensive) but good enough for the job. And if it gets lost, I wouldn't get to gloomy about it and would probably end us replacing it with same one.

Bought for my 7 year old son, as first 'proper' watch (ie not as a toy). He loves it, good quality, good strap, easy to read, typical quality Timex, at a good price. Highly recommended.

I have recently purchased this watch & for the money its fine.I bought it for work as I'm a carpenter & joiner & i dont want to damage an expensive watch so far so good---- although the velcrow strap is to short i have no complaints. the velcro strap also collects all the dust but this is not designed for the workshop! so i can't complain. perhaps timex have missed out on an area? watches for the workshop--shockproof dustproof waterproof hammerproof & easy to see for old boys like me who cant see to well these days. or maybe they have and I'm unaware of it, answers on a post card please!ps there could be a bombproof one I know nouthing about!

Very clear face easy to see. I like the blue light by pressing button to see time in the dark. Smart looking although I suspect fabric strap will lose its pristine lookbover time.
For a tall man, I have a fairly small wrist and the size of the watch and length of strap is more than ideal for me but I can see that someone with an unusually thick wrist might have a problem with it.
Not used in water yet so can't comment on water resistance

I purchased this watch some four years ago. And its still ticking. Apart from a few scratch's and a strap showing some wear. It is by far the best watch I have ever purchased. Its used ever single day and has never skipped a beat. So I would like to recommend this watch as the best all round performer in my book. It's good value for money and I believe will last another four years with no problem. Unless the battery needs changing.

As someone who has purchased Timex watches for decades I have been confident about purchasing any Timex product. However, this is the first time I have cause for complaint. I have purchased two Expedition watches from older ranges in the past, one is a leather buckles trap, and the other had a (it got killed recently) colourful velcro strap. Both men's watches, both with sensible lengths for the straps. This watch however has a ridiculously short strap for a men's watch. The leather tab on the strap end only just contacts the velcro hooks around my wrist, and my wrist isn't huge at all. In fact, the strap is so short it fits around my wife's wrist without reams of strap...it is basically a woman's length strap.

I don't know what Timex are playing at but shortening the straps like this is, quite frankly, idiotic. The watch comes in its own case, with its own cushion, a thick, although small, manual, covering different models and in other languages. The detail is there, except for this peculiarly short strap.

So, for the first time in decades I would honestly think twice about buying a Timex again. Strikes me as penny pinching, or bad design, or both.

I purchased this watch for my 10 year old son. We are both delighted with it. He is especially pleased with the backlit face for use in the dark. I notice that some of the other reviews discussed the short length of the strap for an adult. I'm not sure that this watch was ever intend for use by someone other than a child. In this case, an excellent purchase at a good price.
