5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic end to a wonderful Four Part story!!, 21 April 2009
This review is from: Timewyrm: Revelation (New Doctor Who Adventures) (Paperback)
To be honest, maybe the reason I think this is an excellent read is because I don't need to know the ins and outs of each and every character whom appears in a Doctor Who novel - where they come from, how did they meet the doctor in the first place and so on, unless, of course, where he met them and so on is pertinent to the story being told. In all honesty though, I think it is completely irrelevent to know all about Saul - I think this character stands strong within the story without knowing his particulars and I think because we don't know the ins and outs, it adds to the mysticism of the story.

Whenever I read a Doctor Who Novel, or listen to an audio or watch an episode, my main interests are, first and foremost, that the characters/characteristics of Ace and the Doctor are stringently maintained, that the plot is at least a good one (though I thought Revelation had an excellent plot and a mighty fine resolution to the Timewyrm Universe), and that the guest stars are strong enough to withstand not having to know all about them - I think you get what you need to know about them through their interaction with each other.

Anyhoo, because of all that, I thoroughly enjoyed Revelation. I thought the plot was novel, extremely interesting and thought provoking. The story as a while was a rollercoaster ride which managed to introduce a facet of the Doctor that I had always suspected of him when it came to Ace... and the resolution was just a blast.

Five stars from me and a high recommendation

:)

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent read but no real revelations..., 15 Aug 2004
This review is from: Timewyrm: Revelation (New Doctor Who Adventures) (Paperback)
As a 'Whovian' I am bound to say this was a good read but I did have some reservations. All the usual elements were in place: The enigmatically appealing Seventh Doctor, a vulnerable yet utterly defiant and dependable Ace and the opportunity to wrap up the excellent 'Timewyrm' tetrarchy in style. Sadly, the latter never happened. The idea of using the vicious Lieutenant Hemmings, last seen in 'EXODUS' and delving into Ace's past to see what really makes her tick are inspired ideas, they just didn't really work. The book is jumbled, incomplete and unsatisfying in the extreme; the Timewyrm is given a back seat, the character of Chad Boyle, Ace's playground nemesis, is underdeveloped and the twists and turns just become too convoluted. Worst of all is the village church, 'possessed' by a benign spirit named Saul, who is never fully explained.
As always though, redemption comes in the way the Doctor is portrayed and used in the story. The inclusion of the shades of his previous incarnations was entertaining and you do feel left with a little more understanding of what makes him tick. Cat's Cradle here I come..!

3.0 out of 5 stars good, but not great, 24 Jun 2007
This review is from: Timewyrm: Revelation (New Doctor Who Adventures) (Paperback)
after the first three cracking good parts of timewyrm series, revelation is an ok but not brilliant ending. too much running around and the doctor's defeat of the timewyrm seems stupid as the first three parts build up an image of an unstoppable foe, but this story rounds it off quite "normally", not the grand last chapter i thought the story would be. the only weak story paul cornell's ever done. but not totally unentertaining.
