3.0 out of 5 stars Worth a try 6 Mar 2012
By K. Wright VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
As a teacher I was keen to try out this CD with my year 3 class as I have used similar resources before with Key Stage 1 children. The CD coveres each multiplication table from the 2's to the 12's. For each table there is a reading of the table in order to a music backing, then the same tables are sung by a man and woman taking turns. After that it is repeated with gaps for the answers for the children to reply. Then the times tables are sung in a random order with gaps for a trickier test. Each song is recorded to a different style of music and it comes with a booklet with each times table written out clearly. However, it doesn't come with a track list which is a shame as it makes it harder to find the correct track quickly.

After using it with 7 and 8 year old there was a mixed response. Around half the children really loved joining in and would like to use it regularly whereas the other half really didn't like it and would rather write out calculations. I think part of the problem is that some of the songs seemed a bit 'babyish' to the children but also that some children still need time to work out the answers as they can't recall the facts rapidly enough. Overall I would recommend giving this CD a try as some children will love to learn in this way but it is by no means for everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Times Tables With A Smile! 22 Jan 2012
By A. Milne TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have previously tried a different times tables cd as I figured that it would be a great way to get my music loving, NOT times tables loving son to learn them relatively painlessly. That one, however, was a disaster as it sounded a bit condescending and the music sounded almost like nursery rhymes - needless to say he didn't put up with that for long!

Luckily, this cd is a very different cup of tea! We felt slightly relieved the moment it started up because at least the person reading the two times table sounded normal. It's hard to make reading the two times table out interesting, admittedly, but at least these weren't read sooooo sllooowwwllllyy that you felt like giving up before you even reached the first song, as happened with our previous cd! As soon as the song for the two times table started up, though, we all started to smile. This cd is a bit of fun - the songs are all in different styles such as blues, rock and reggae and they genuinely do make you want to join in and sing along.

Each table is read out first of all. This is then followed by a song where the table is first of all sung all the way through, then sung again with a gap for the kids to fill in the answer and, finally, sung again but this time the table is all muddled up to test the children. The tables are all written out in the cd insert.

I have to say that this cd has really worked for us because it is lighthearted and fun and has my son singing along without realising that he's working and taking on board his tables. Hurray! Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars As Fun as Learning Times Tables Could Be! 23 Feb 2012
By Crafty Marie TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I had no real idea what to expect when we got this CD but my daughter is at an age where she is ready to start to learn her times tables and just needs some encouragement to do so.

Each set of times tables is set to a different style of music like jazz and blues etc. Some of the tunes are catchier than others but it is hard I think to make the tables sound interesting.

First a complete set of tables is spoken with the answers. Next comes the song where the child sings along. The song is then repeated without the answers so the child is supposed to shout them out. Lastly come some random times tables from the set which are in a jumbled order to really test a child's knowledge.

I think it's a good way to learn and what I really am thankful for is the little booklet in the CD case which has all the tables written out so my daughter while still learning can read them out and follow the songs to.

The only drawbacks for us are that it goes a little too fast and my daughter finds it hard to think of the answer in time. Also she gets bored after a couple of songs. But I guess that's to be expected. I definitely think she can learn her tables with this CD however. So overall a thumbs up!

3.0 out of 5 stars "a bit boring" 29 Feb 2012
By lilysmum VINE VOICE

This is my daughter's summation of this CD of times tables set to music. She says the voices are too high and sing song. Well, I suppose she has a point about it being boring. I was thinking of playing it in the car to her as a captive audience til she knows her tables properly. She has little confidence in herself as a learner and I think that CDs like this can help build confidence, if children like them. Maybe a slightly younger child (my daughter is 10) would like this better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be better 21 Feb 2012
By DavyA TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This CD is OK, it is another tool to have in when learning the tables is getting dull. The CD has the tables in 3 ways for each set of multiples, so just says them, then sings them to music and then sings them again with gaps for the child to chip in with the answer. While it is good to have a bit of music to sing along with, there is nothing memorable about the tunes and nothing additional to aid the learning, so if there was imagary to go with it, so you could picture what the answer to 5*7 is or if the songs included rules it might be better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funky and brilliant! 21 Jan 2012
By Easterchick VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is the second 'times tables' CD we've had for our girls now and I have to admit, they are all very samey - music more suited to preschoolers than Key Stage 1, and very repetitive - if listening to it in the car, by the time you get to the 12 x table you want to throw it out of the window!

This one, on the other hand, is fun! It starts with the times table being 'read' in a normal voice, then follows on with it put to music. Next is it being sung but with gaps so your child can provide the answer, and then the last (and best) bit, sung again with gaps but randomly rather than starting at 1 and working upwards - so your child can really test their knowledge.

Best bit of all is the lively and entertaining soundtrack. This is times tables funked up - the 2 x times table is blues (ish), 'Chase the blues with the twos!' the 5 x table is 'jive with the fives!' - we thought the music was great! Even had us doing a bit of air guitar to the 2 x table - and as a result the kids thought this was fun rather than a chore.

In my opinion this is probably the best of the bunch!!
