Despite having been together since the late 80s, Neurosis have only recently gained the popularity they rightly deserve, with bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan bringing hardcore to a wider audience.
"Times of Grace" is probably the highlight of Neurosis' well-established career. It is a fascinating listen from start to finish. The tracks tend to last around 8 or 9 minutes and are a combination of dense drumming, deep base, crushing guitars and roared vocals to create a dark, gloomy, perhaps even slightly creepy, sound. For the me, the music really does draw up images of an apocalyptic landscape.
There are also a number of shorter, instrumental, tracks and track 9, "Away", is much softer, the vocals sung rather than shouted, with the song cutting to the sound of wind blowing, every so often. This track comes as a welcome addition, as it proves just how diverse the band are, and that the softer tracks can be used to just as powerful effect as the heavier ones.
Neurosis can also be noted for their use of the bagpipes. I was a bit unsure, before buying "Times of Grace", just how well this would work, but can safely say that it really helps to elevate the sound. Unlike Korn, for example, who also use bagpipes in their music, Neurosis don't make them sound superficial, but actually use them to add to the atmosphere.
Overall, an experience not to be missed. Even if you're not a fan of the hardcore genre, you should at least give "Times of Grace" a go. The more you listen to it, the more it draws you in...

I'm new to Neurosis. I bought 'Honor Found in Decay' a few months ago and loved it. I have since learned that it one of this great unsung band's least loved offerings by fans. I have since bought the excellent 'Through Silver In Blood' and 'Souls at Zero' and this one might just top Through Silver.. but I'm undecided yet. This is definitely their more 'to the point' album so far, as none of the songs go over 10 minutes. As I understand this is their first collaboration with producer Steve Albini, and it's little wonder they stuck with him judging by the sheer quality of the songs, the production and the tones of this album. Following the great little electronic intro 'The Doorway' explodes out of the speakers with its Drop A, intense riffing nicely complemented by sone clever electronic work and memorable vocal delivery. The album then is then a mix of hammering heaviness and beautiful crafted melancholy. 'The End Of Harvest' and 'Away' are two great examples of the variety on offer here. A great Neurosis album and I would probably say their most accessible...well as accessible as Neurosis are ever likely to get I suppose. Highly recommended and comes an accompanying ambient 'Tribes of Neurot' (Neurosis's electronic alter egos) CD which is meant to be played at the same time. If you would like a great mix of heavy sludge riffs, electronic ambience and prog mellow moments give this a go. It might take 2 or 3 listens for it to sink in but it will be worth it.

An album so wound-fudgingly heavy it's like Sabbath did a load of Valium to mong out, then smoked some crack, then drank 15 stella, yet did it all to ambient perfection...

mmm!

neurosis need no introductions to those who know them, they are the innovators of their craft, many bands have followed their lead of slow tempo, and light moments followed by crushing brutality, and in this album the use of cello and bagpipes makes perfect sense.
Times of grace is just immense,it is never boring, what you get is 11 songs, some instrumentals, with as much purpose and passion as you could ever dream off, each song is like a journey,it sweeps you off your feet, songs such as 'the doorway'and the sublime 'the last youll know' are just sheer perfection, its all so beautiful,i mean it when i say this ,neurosis are one of the few bands who could make you weep ,that my friends is some skill in heavy music
