Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Times Maths for Ages 7-11 is aimed at Key Stage 2 children providing a wide range of games to cover work done in schools as part of the National Numeracy Strategy. Ace Monkey guides children through simple mathematical explanations of, for example, addition, division, and 2-D and 3-D shapes, and then introduces activities such as filling in the missing numbers in a pattern and identifying odd and even numbers to consolidate their understanding. On completion of each activity children can print out a certificate.

The addition and subtraction activities involve solving problems with numbers to 100, 1,000 and 10,000, which is the most challenging part of the program.

Children can also visit the fun house where they can play games to consolidate what they have learned in each section. They can escape from the maze in Ace adventure by answering questions, practice writing numbers and navigate their way around the maths maze. There is a guidance section for parents that explains each game clearly and advises how the program is best used with children.

Although the graphics in this program are good and a child would find it easy to navigate the different games, the actual content is not really challenging enough for a Key Stage 2 child. Most of the activities cover levels that would be more appropriate for 6-7 year olds. --Amanda York

1.0 out of 5 stars Technically OK but content useless to my daughter., 10 Oct 2003

    Not impressed at all !

    * The system information section suggests that there is a means for parents to monitor a childs progress - couldn't find it and I have worked in computing for over 15 years !

    * The funhouse is supposed to have 3 games but there are only 2.

    * The fractions section is more like KS1 and bears no relation to what my daughter is learning now (she's in year 5). My wife who is a prmary teacher also bears out my suggestion that is is more akin to KS1 than KS2.

The only thing that seems to make this product look like KS2 as opposed to KS1 is the size of the numbers (above 10 and into the 1000's)

I tried to call the helpdesk to see if there is a 'patch' to resolve the technical problems and was notified of a number change when calling that number I got a 'silent recording'.

Its only £8.99 if you've got that sort of money to throw away give it to your child's school to buy more maths bookx. I'm sending my copy back. It is a shame it is endorsed by the 2003 teacher of the year and the Times because it doesn't do what is says in the packet.
