4.0 out of 5 stars A good alternative to HEAP 4 July 2011
Format:Paperback
As someone applying for university in 2012 it seemed a good idea to purchase a book like this to give me an impartial look at prospective universities. HEAP is referred to as the "go-to" guide for university choices, however, i would say that it offers little more than the Times Good University Guide in terms of useful content and at £32.99 you are paying an unnecessary £23 more. I found the back section of the book, containing detailed reviews of each university a great help and the small map showing the location of the university (although a small thing) was extremely useful.

Overall i would definitely recommend the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacking detail on the funding changes for 2012 15 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
I agree with a previous reviewer that this is a disappointment. In particular it's a wasted opportunity to help students (and parents) get to grips with the changes for 2012 entry.

It's sketchy on the measures that universities charging more than £6,000 have to put in place to support students from poorer backgrounds and it lacks proper information on the places where there will be £3,000 or more worth of fee reductions, cash and accommmodation bursaries on offer as part of the National Scholarship Programme.

The book frankly does not deliver the promised 'compehensive overview' of bursaries. Almost every university listing says the same thing "Scholarships and bursaries based on circumstances or by competition. Check the university's website for the latest information". I thought the whole point of buying these guides is that they are supposed to save the effort of checking hundreds of other sources individually.

It's not just the lower end of the spectrum that the book ignores. There is no mention for example of how top universities are offering financial incentives to students with A level grades of AAB or better.

I also think that any responsible guide should be offering more guidance on fee waivers and bursaries and why, if there is a choice and the amounts are the same, it's best to choose a bursary.

These things are a big miss for 2012 and I can't help feeling the author or the publisher has made a mis-judgement.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Poor 21 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Second time of purchasing this guide (last time, 5 years ago for my elder daughter). Last time, we found it useful and informative, but this time book returned as (1) It spends too much time on the application process which, frankly, is now well covered in schools and elsewhere and (2) Its individual Uni snapshots are weak and lack depth or true analysis. Very disappointing
