Timeless is the fifth studio from the Italian Genesis tribute band. Like its predecessors, it is heavily influenced by the sound of early 1970s Genesis and will appeal broadly to fans of that era. As with much of their previous output, the new compositions suggest the route Genesis may have taken had their classic line-up remained intact.
Genesis fans will be aware that their first album `From Genesis To Revelation' was a million miles from their signature sound and remains to this day largely ignored. For `Timeless', the Watch announced that they would be re-interpreting some of the tracks from that period - perhaps giving an impression of how those songs might have sounded had the classic Genesis line-up re-visited them with the benefit of a few years' recording experience. Of the two tracks chosen, `In The Wilderness' works best with a new vibrancy and an instrumental break which I think even Gabriel & co. would have approved of. `Let Us Now Make Love' has had a similar makeover, however the original version was one of the few tracks from that period which pointed the way to the emerging Genesis style and, it could be argued, there were plenty other tracks which would have benefited more from being tackled in this manner.
Three of the remaining `new' compositions seem to borrow heavily from the chorus of `In The Wilderness' and particularly in the case of penultimate track `Exit' there seems to be little point in this. The album is padded out to just under 45 minutes with a live cover of `Stagnation' from the second Genesis album `Trespass.'
On the whole, Timeless is a very good album. I just wish there had been more of it. I don't see the point in tribute bands releasing live copycat versions of the songs they cover and would have happily seen `Stagnation' replaced with some original material or one of the older Genesis tracks given a makeover.
As an aside, I don't know if Jonathan King gets any kind of royalties from the use of tracks from the first Genesis album and I would hate to think that someone with his past would benefit financially from this project.
