Book Description

4 Mar 2013
Introduction to the Updated Expanded Edition With the feedback from our readers we expanded our first edition's content. We have fixed the few errors and rare factual inaccuracies we had found. Several readers asked that we look at and make meaning about more of their songs. We have done that with three (see next page): 'Question,' 'New Horizons,' and 'I'm just a singer' (in a R&R band). Just after completing this book we went on their first "Moodies Cruise" and now include a summary of our experience there. We obtained the new Timeless Flight box set that was released three months after this book and listened to the CDs and watched its DVD video material. We also read their extensive accompanying "coffee table" sized book. We have read the many online comments on this box set and have included a relevant few of them in our 7 page review of this large box set. This is a landmark book by two long-time Moody Blues fans. In this book we examine and bring to light the music and message of this great band of poets and musicians who have produced hit music for almost 50 years! Here's a little on what our book is about and the areas that we explore: • How they are unique among bands and music groups • What critics and others have said • The nature of their musical magic and message • How the Moodies' words and music work, song by song • Using 7 levels of listening to their music • Why listening to their music raises our consciousness • How their fans have listened consistently for so long • Why they have excelled for nearly five decades From the Foreword by Moody Blues co-founder, keyboardist and vocalist Mike Pinder "It was very interesting to read Charles and Barbara Whitfield's interpretations of our music and message. They suggest clear and useful ideas and ways for those who are newly exploring our music and for the many who have been on this journey with us from the beginning. I have always been interested in the broader qualities of music to inform, heal, raise consciousness and uplift. This was often on my mind when I wrote a song or painted the backdrop for others in the band with counter melodies and my Mellotron. In contrast to most observers of our music, I saw how the authors here delve below the surface and give us an enjoyable interpretation of our words and music. They examine essentially their every aspect. Not only do they address our lyrics from a scholarly and poetic perspective, but they offer us some insightful and sometimes surprising interpretations of them beyond what many listeners and fans may consider. Music has changed our world. It has the potential for reaching within, opening our minds and our hearts to the power of Universal Love. It transforms, strengthens, relaxes, teaches and enlightens us. The Whitfields realize these truths and give us a strong base from which to experientially understand them. They integrate the many positive messages of our words and music by giving us a clear and constructive map of healing that is on the cutting edge of psychology, consciousness studies and spirituality. Memories are also closely associated with music. I have always thought that we hang our memories on the shape of sound. With memorable melodies, counter melodies and instrumentation we were able to create soundscapes for many to hang the best memories of their lives. Those of us who remember the 1960s and beyond will appreciate their attention to the detail of our works and the history of how it all came about. They show us how the Moodies have expressed, preserved and continue to remind us of the message and wisdom of the 60s by keeping it so alive. And how there was a natural spirituality that still lives in all of us and that is manifested in our descriptions of Love." - Mike Pinder March 2013 Visit Us: at MoodiesBook.Wordress.com and MuseHousePress.com

2.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version unreadable 26 April 2013
By Yorkie
Format:Kindle Edition
As a long-time MB fan, I'd love to comment on the content of this book, but unfortunately much of the Kindle version is unreadable. It may well be OK in paperback, but whoever formatted this for Kindle didn't make a very good job of it. All the comments on the lyrics are written in box-style tables, and these are just too small to read on a Kindle screen. Increasing the font size makes absolutely no difference to the text in the tables, which stays the same tiny size. In desperation, I even tried using text-to-speech, but this completely ignores the tables. The only way is to use a magnifying glass, which quickly becomes tiring and defeats the object of an e-reader. So unless someone re-formats this book properly for Kindle, for me, sadly, it will remain unread.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disapointing 18 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The problem here is that three of the Moodies have not fed back their thoughts into the book. The "explanatioons" of the lyrics are all the authors own and to be honest I could have written similar personal "revelations".

1.0 out of 5 stars Amateurish, disappointing to say the least 21 July 2013
By Charles T. Mcdonald - Published on Amazon.com
The Moody Blues deserve "real writers" to tell their story. The authors fawn and
gush incessantly about their subject(s) ad-nauseum. At the end of one page they actually write, "get out your copies of their albums and listen," never supposing for a second that their target audience may have (ahem) heard every note of every track in their cannon, and probably don't need didactic instruction. I share their passion for this criminally neglected band, but bottom line, these folks are NOT MUSIC WRITERS, this is an amateurish, embarrassing work replete with psycho-babble to make it even more irritating. Wait for Justin's Autobiography.

5.0 out of 5 stars MAPPING THE HIGH ROAD 8 May 2013
By Gerry Sperry - Published on Amazon.com

by Charles L. Whitfield MD and Barbara H. Whitfield CMT, RT

For the devotional listener, The Moody Blues are the music of Higher Longing, reawakening deep yearnings for those oceanic experiences and emotions, both sad and joyful, that at once transform and transcend ordinary concerns. Regardless of our station in life, we each of us know, consciously or not, a vast deprivation of fulfillment without these higher sensibilities, yet they elude us in our daily struggle to maintain a worldly equilibrium. Unlike other contemporary Pop/Rock, Moodies music never denies those higher needs or our life's longings for greater creative love, work and meaning. To the contrary, their music encourages, nurtures, explores, and openly defines and redefines over time our shared individual experiences, adding a greater awareness for the mind and a deeper love within the soul.
For the devotional listener, the Moodies are a beautiful, essential reminder of just what it means to be genuinely, deeply, truly human.

In their book, Timeless Troubadours: The Moody Blues, professional healers Charles and Barbara Whitfield provide a fundamental listeners guide and solid mental/spiritual scaffold by which a wounded soul - and we are all wounded in some degree - can come to realize greater understanding, healing, awareness and fulfillment through deep listening to The Moody Blues accompanied by self-cognitive analysis. The authors chart a simple, clear path by which the listener/reader can come to fruitful realizations of both the meaning in the music and it's relevance to his or her own life. There is a certain inevitability to the explanations in this wonderful book in the same way that those things we universally recognize as simple and true (and beautiful) have. The authors diagrammatic explication of pitch, harmony, and melody, has the same "Aha!"of recognition as a simple diagram for the propagation of light. Their suggestive interpretations of Moodies lyrics always speak to the heart while allowing for the unique experiences and interpretations of the listener/reader. And for those of us always interested in the back-story of the Moodies, The Whitfield's have leavened their book with enough interesting details to levitate a historian.

For reasons difficult to explain, it's hard to find any written material on The Moodies, let alone a book as significant, inspirational, and engaging as the Whitfield's, Timeless Troubadours:.... It's a work destined to be essential in the collective canon about the greatest popular musicians of our age.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time 8 Jan 2014
By Paige Turner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
this book was quickly written to capitalize the authors being on The Moody Blues Cruise in 2013. They were paying passengers the same as everyone else, yet tried to use this poorly edited self published book to try to meet and mingle with the Moodies, and be seen as celebrities themselves they tried to make money off the moodies work, were told where the errors were in the book by band members, and refused to make corrections, because they wouldn't have this hastily pulled together mess on that cruise. One member of the Moody Blues said publically during the cruise to not let anyone tell you what the lyrics mean, sometimes a story is just a story

enjoy the music, use this book as toilet paper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Conduit Of Spiritual Wisdom 13 Mar 2013
By Topher - Published on Amazon.com
Soooo, I never really heard the Moody Blues. I'm 29. I always thought that they were some kind of Stevie Ray Vaughn interpretation or something to that extent. I just listened to Days of Future Passed, aaaaand...NOW I'M A MOODY FREAK! I discovered this book through reading other pieces of literature published by Charles and Barbara Whitfield. By the time I read up to chapter 4; read the lyrics and interpretations; and listened through the album: Days Of Future Passed, I knew I was going to be listening to A LOT MORE.

I instantly identified with the lyrics which are so beautifully authentic. They really validated a lot of my own personal experiences. Charles and Barbara really helped bridge the gap for me on this as well. It was the same experience I had when I read their work. I found myself saying, "YES, you understand!" For me, good art has a way of capturing what exists naturally in the world and always has: the phenomena of the human experience. It's like a still frame; seen through the eyes of a child; free of judgment; objective; simple; and yet so complex. It allows me, the viewer, to vicariously experience what is seen. In my opinion, The Moody's and The Whitfield's take it one step further by adding the "wisdom" of their experiences.

The music really captured me as well. I am a music lover and actually studied jazz as my major in college. I find the music to be a great catalyst for the lyrics. The ambient movement of the music really adds to the mysticism of spirituality found, intended or not, in their lyrics.

I look forward to discovering and enjoying more of the Moody Blues, and I recommend this book and music to anyone who is 1) A die hard Moody Blues fan 2) Interested in healing, mysticism, raising consciousness, or spirituality 3) Is a music lover and wants to explore any of these realms. I just plain recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little too much psycho babble for me 28 May 2013
By Ava Radoff - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was hoping to love this book, but cannot say that I am totally enamored. I am a long time Moody Blues fan, and their music has a profound and personal meaning for me. I like some of the authors' interpretations of lyrics and meanings, but I think some of it goes too far. Sometimes, things are better left alone.
