Agree with other reviewers that these aren't very easy to program, but I have 2 which are working fine controlling my towel rails. Not the best made product in the world, but it's the only one of its kind available.

This timer fitted my criterion perfectly. Because of the timer design I was able to remove an existing fused spur switch and fit this unit directly, no fuss, so simple, no additional boxes, no additional wiring. Programming the unit may be complicated but in my opinion it is no more difficult than programming all the rest of the electronic timers I have ever come across. I fitted the timer to a water filled electric towel radiator, the amount of on-off selections available more than satisfied the heating requirements. I have just ordered another three timer units to control three more towel radiators I am now converting to dual [Water/electric] source, we are that satisfied with the product.

I have to say I was very disappointed with this product. The first thing that I noticed was that there is no earth connections on the rear. Just live and neutral in and out. I'm not sure that is wise when running 13 amps through it. I also had earth wires that I would have need to connected via another connector (not supplied). The connections at the rear are quite small and only big enough for one cable, so make sure your input is no on a ring main or anything else with dual cables coming in (they will not fit). I'm afraid I am going to try and send it back. I've not found another one in my local homebase which seems much better and was half the price.

There may be a quality control problem with this product. I have now had two units that do not work properly (see below). Prior to that, I note

* Supplier has, so far, been very helpful.
* Programming was easy to use (in my opinion).
* Lack of E terminals was not a big issue - I just used a strip connector to join all the earths.

The problem with the first timeswitch was that it never switched the appliance off (neither based on the programme nor using the Adv button). Using an electrical test screwdriver, I could see that "L Out" remained high even though the blue LED was off and the timeswitch display showed "off". The dipole switch correctly isolated the appliance.

The second unit also failed to switch the appliance off but was more dangerous. In that case, even the dipole switch failed to isolate "L Out". Only with the fuse removed did "L Out" go low. Using a resistance meter, I could see that the dipole switch correctly isolated the neutral line: giving the appearance that the appliance was isolated. I will take this up with the manufacturer and report back with any response.

The Timeguard FST17A 7-Day Supply Master Fused Spur Timeswitch was well packed and was delivered very promptly indeed by Bamford Trading. The Timeswitch had adequate instructions and was straightforward to fit. Obviously proper attention must be paid to correctly wiring it in and professional help should be sought if in any doubt. Programming the times and days of operation was quite logical and instructions for this were supplied and easy to follow. You do have to make sure that there is sufficient space in the box to take the protrusions at the back of the faceplate and by way of example, if there is a lot of excess wiring curled up in the box then this may inhibit fitting to some degree. Obviously, one then has to reduce the excess clutter in the back box but all-in-all this is pretty obvious stuff, I suppose. If the appliance needs earthing then obviously a way to maintain continuity must be found because there is no earth terminal on the Timeswitch plate itself. If the person fitting this has any doubts at all as to what they are doing then get someone who does know about these things because once this Timeswitch is fitted it does a really great job and was well worth buying. Having made quite an extensive search and found that there appears to be no other Timeswitch of this type readily available, this has to be the best option for the general buyer like me. I was slightly concerned about purchasing this after reading some reviewers who had a little difficulty with the fitting or with setting the times, but because there was no other choice for this type of Timeswitch I decided to give it a try. I am glad I made the purchase because after taking care with the fitting of it and with the setting of the timers I am left with a perfectly working Timeswitch which does just what I wanted it to do.Read more ›

The FST17a is a 7-day time switch (max RESISTIVE load 13A) and can be programmed as
7 individual days with unique on-off settings for each day,
5+2 days i.e. Mon-Fri identical on-off times & Sat-Sun identical on-off times or simply as:-
a 24 hour timer with all 7 days on-off periods the same

The good:
Versatile programming options.
Auto daylight saving adjustment i.e. the clock will auto advance & retard one hour each March/October. The clock is not radio controlled though, this is programmed into the timer until 2050.
Simple time switch override & 1/2 hour "boost" by pressing one button.

The bad: (in fact very bad:)
NO earth bonding point or strap meaning no earth for the mounting screws! I really can't understand how this got through BS approval - other than by the unit being double-insulated I guess. What this means is that there is no earth bonding point on the timer module, you must use a single-way terminal connector to connect the earth wire of the appliance being timed to the earth wire coming out of the back box. Not good!

The "Even worse"! The design of the back of the unit prevents it being mounted even in a 42mm metal recessed back box if it has two vertical front plate mounting screw holes as well as two horizontal mounting holes. There is a large protuberance near the top in the middle of the timer (which I suspect is the relay switch) that fouls the two vertical mounting screw brackets on the recessed metal back box. So you have to either hack these brackets off with a hacksaw (pretty difficult in 38mm of space) or do as I did and buy a 42mm depth surface mounting box, carefully widen two of the preformed fixing screw holes and using large washers on the 3.
