Amazon.co.uk Review

Tsui Hark's triumphant return to making a film set in the present day, Time and Tide, is so fast-moving and kinetically stylised that at times the plot's coherence has to be taken on trust. Young barman Tyler (Nicholas Tse) gets a lesbian cop pregnant after a drunken one-night stand when she fell out with her lover. He feels an obligation to raise money to help her and takes a job in the third-rate bodyguard company of Uncle Li (Anthony Wong), showing a real flair for the job, but not for Li's over-organised system. Coincidentally, he befriends Jack (Wu Bai), husband of the daughter of Li's main client, but also a retired mercenary, whose former allies are in town and up to no good. The two friends find themselves intermittently co-operating and opposed as they pursue their separate agendas; the violence, the bodycount and the special effects all escalate continually. Highlights include some spectacular scenes of grappling down skyscrapers and Tyler's delivering the baby of his friend's wife while she shoots one of her husband's enemies over his shoulder--Tsui Hark's take on the post-John Woo thriller is entertainingly exaggerated and semi-parodic.

On the DVD: The DVD has a choice of English, German and Cantonese dubbing and subtitles in 18 languages from Hindi to Icelandic, and comes with filmographies and theatrical trailers. The soundtrack, full of loud music and explosions, is presented in an abrasively loud Dolby Sound. The film is presented in widescreen letterbox in the film's original 2.35:1 aspect ratio; the digital format brings out its deliberately garish colours and use of shadows. --Roz Kaveney

After a failed attempt at trying to establish himself in America with average films like 'Double Team' & 'Knock Off', leagendary Hong Kong producer/director Tsui Hark returned to Chinese cinema in 2000 with style to make the excellent 'Time and Tide'.

The plot starts off when a bartender named Tyler, played by Chinese popstar Nicholas Tse, has a drunken one night stand with a lesbian cop (?!) and gets her pregnant. Feeling guilty, Tyler decides to get a job in a Bodyguard firm run by Uncle Li (Anthony Wong) to help support the baby. One day the firm gets an job to protect a rich Businessman who.... and the plot from then on goes completely off the rails. But you won't really care, as this is one film where the action is more important than the plot itself.

Time and Tide is so action packed and fast moving, you'll be guaranteed not to be bored for a single minute with the last half of the film having some of the best violence I've seen since John Woo's infamous 'Hard Boiled'. The action set pieces are all choreographed and filmed to perfection, using some clever visual effects. The 'grappling down a skyscraper' scene has to be seen to be belived!

Tsui Hark, director of Hong Kong classics like 'Once uopn a Time in China 1,2&3', 'The Blade' and producer on 'The killer' and 'A Better Tomorrow' (both directed by John Woo) shows that he hasn't lost his magic touch when it comes to excitement and originality.

The film isn't for everyone, but for fans of Hong Kong cinema or action fans in general should check it out, highly recommended!

Sublime action film 31 July 2006
Format:DVD
Time & Tide is a very good film. Very interesting, always pacey and it never lets down.

The Good

- Action is frantic!

- Unrelenting Pace. The camera angles add so much intensity to the performances

- Very modern. The film feels young unlike many other Asian action films like the Infernal Affairs trilogy which has an aging cast.

- The film is very slick and always exciting. You really are on the edge of your seat throughout the entire movie!

The Bad

- While watching the film, you do begin to think where some of the story went. The South American gangs appear out of nowhere and there's no back story for Tyler (Nicholas Tse).

Something has gone wrong with Tsui Hark's filmaking ability since his wonderful martial epic "The Blade"
This movie is the latest in a long line of inept, boring, nonsensical action damp squibs. It just fails to ignite. All his high profile work with John Woo is woefully absent in this movie as well as his hollywood efforts and the majorly disappointing "Seven Swords" His grasp of shooting full on action scenes seems to have mellowed with age. This effort takes forever to get moving and by the time you get to the real meat in this distinctly veggie effort you no longer care. To this day after 2 viewings i am still non the wiser as to the logic of the plot. As with a lot of hong kong movies scant attention is paid to linear storytelling and even now they are making it up as they go along, as is the case here. It all looks great and up to date but is impossible to comprehend. Too many erratic plotlines and brief inneffective action sequences make for an annoying waste of your valuable time. Thanx
