5.0 out of 5 stars Never ceases to amaze me, 13 Aug 2002
By Mr.D. (Northumberland UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Time and Tide (Audio CD)
20 years on, Time and Tide still sounds fresh, containing a collection of songs that are among Neil and Tim Finn's best. Each song follows on perfectly from the one that precedes it, to such a degree that it becomes unthinkable to not listen to the album in its entirety once you've begun. And although there is this unity to the album, individual songs are worthy of mention: Six Months in a Leaky Boat is infectiously catchy - the type of song you'll be singing along with when driving; Haul Away tells the story of a New Zealand childhood set to a marching sea-shanty melody; Log Cabin Fever starts eerily and ends in a welter of guitars and keyboards; and my favourite (and as good as anything Neil Finn has ever written)- Hello Sandy Allen, an amusing little piece complete with pounding drums, wailing siren effects and plenty of electric guitars.
Probably slightly better than Conflicting Emotions,(and the two albums sound like companion pieces), Time and Tide will never cease to amaze you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time and tide, a piece of musical driftwood, timeless songs, 16 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Time and Tide (Audio CD)
Anyone who has ever used music in times of personal upheaval will find much to be inspired by from this 'Concept' Album. The Soaring Rock of 'Sandy Allen' will lift you high and prepare you for the albums closure, the travellers warning that is the beautiful yet simple 'Haul Away' which fuses into the claustrophobic 'Log cabin Fever', itself a musical 'Blair witch' over a decade too soon. Destinations on the way include the Enz live anthem '6 months in a leaky boat', a circus and carnival of a song which the listener is introduced to by the synthetic chords of the 'Pioneer' instrumental. This album is a self contained body of work that demands to be heard as a whole, to feel its inspiration and connect with the band and hear how it felt to leave Australia and NZ, and experience life in the music business away from home. It's all here. A fine piece of work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless, 23 Feb 2004
This review is from: Time and Tide (Audio CD)
This remains something of an undiscovered classic. Has the normal 'Finn' attributes of well crafted songwriting and catchy tunes, but the excellent production and depth of musical contributions from the other members of the band make this one a bit more special. Driving guitar and piano, singalong pop and playful lyrics all contribute to songs with a consistently high standard and overall cohesion. It is rare to find such sustained quality on a single recording.

Never bettered by Neil or Tim and an absolute must for any Crowded House fan. I couldn't recommend it more highly.
