More About the Author

Jean Gross is a best-selling author who writes about children's issues. She is passionate about achieving better life chances for children who don't have much going for them in their lives - particularly disadvantaged children and those with special educational needs. She writes practical books that aim to help teachers and says 'What I do when I write is collect the fantastic practice I have seen on my travels and try to put a conceptual framework around it, linking practice to research evidence.' Jean has been a teacher, an educational psychologist, head of children's services in a local authority, and a Visiting Fellow at two universities. She was until recently the UK government's Communication Champion for children, responsible for promoting the importance of good language skills. Before this she headed a charity responsible for one-to-one literacy and numeracy tuition programmes, and led work on overcoming barriers to achievement as a Director of the government's National Strategies. She was awarded a CBE for services to education in 2011.

Jean Gross has written an amazing book.

It is thorough and thought provoking, and distills the knowledge about children with speech language and communication difficulties with practical meaningful approaches.

She has managed to cross the boundaries between the research and practice, the therapists and teachers, the stategic planners and the parents, the models of learning English as an additonal language and the traditional developmental language models.

Language and communication skills in the classroom and throughout school are given the priority they need in Jeans view of Education. She draws the links together between delayed communication skills and attainment, behaviour, reading, life skills and poor preschool language experience.

This is a must read for every teacher, assistant, speech and language therapist, school improvement officer, headteacher, SENCO, indeed anyone involved in the broadest sense of Education. There is also much which would be of interest to parents.

This book deserves to be read widely, and to have the influence that is needed in Education today. I hope the inspiration in this book supports the improvement in practice in every school across Britain.

Jean Gross really is a champion.

I read this book one evening and even continued to read it at bedtime. It is readable, practical and theoretical. There are several practical ideas in the book but it is always backed up by evidence. This book should be required reading for all working with children but especialy for those working with those with speech, language and communication needs

Bought this after being recommended it by a qualified teacher. It makes good links to the research and comes up with some interesting facts about the value of fostering good communication skills. Some of the case study examples have also given me some good ideas for lessons plans.
