Book Description

The first in the brand new series of Sally Reardon Supernatural mysteries, written by bestselling novelist Steven Savile and his award-winning co-writer Steve Lockley.

A once-beautiful country mansion in historical Dorchester, provides the backdrop to a haunting novelette. One suicide is a tragedy, two an unfortunate coincidence, but three is a problem for police forensic investigator Sally Reardon. Can she solve the mystery of Birkin House before she becomes the fourth?

FROM THE AUTHORS

The Sally Reardon Supernatural Mysteries are intended to be a series experience with new installments coming out fairly regularly, each one hopefully developing and adding on from the ideas in the one before. We thought it'd be fun to build a series in the same way we would a TV show with linked but separate stories that come together to feed a bigger overall series arc.

In keeping with that we made a conscious decision to make them something you could read in a single sitting, just like one of those TV shows you'd sit and watch in a 45 minute block. These aren't novels, they're novelettes, which means they run around 12,000-15,000 words, or about 30 minutes reading at the speed we read.

We set out to write something fans of shows we enjoyed, things like Medium and Afterlife, would enjoy, with the emphasis on the supernatural but very deliberately away from anything horrific.

The series continues in MISSING, DEADLINES and OUT OF SEASON.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read 14 April 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
A star turn - Of Time & Dust is the first in the Sally Reardon series - which follow a police detective with latent psychic powers working to solve the more unique cases.
Three suicides in recent years at Birkin House, too much of a coincidence, surely. Sally delves further and uncovers a grisly history of suffering and revenge that echoes through the centuries.

The story fairly bristles with energy and supernatural tension, and the chilling climax will have you desperate to read Missing - the next story in the series, just to see what happens to Sally.

Tight suspense combines with elegant yet horrific details of the past crimes that occurred in Birkin House to create an all-too brief thriller that you will have to finish in one sitting.

This isn't the first collaboration between the two Steve's that I've read, and going by the quality here, it definitely won't be the last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect supernatural tale 3 Jun. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I've read both these guys work before, and knew I was in safe hands, but I'd never read a collaboration from them and was worried whether it would work.

I needn't have. This short barrels along like a train, building up the creep factor as it goes to a nicely done final denoument that leaves you thinking.

And all done in less than 48 hours by Steve and Steven. A great job.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good short chiller. 18 Jun. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The first thing I have to say about this story is that it's a genuine chilling story. Although the point-of-view protagonist, Sally Reardon has quite a sardonic/humours way of looking at things, the authors have managed to filter her experiences so that we feel genuine chills at some of the ghostly goings-on. The prose is tight and readable making this a quick satisfying read.

My only gripe, and the only reason why I didn't give it five stars is that I thought apart from the blurb on the amazon description, I didn't actually know where the protagonist fit within the police structure of the story. I couldn't tell if she was a freelancer or an actual member of the police. However, this is a minor gripe and it didn't detract from what was a great 30-40mins read.

I've already bought the other episodes in the story.

If you like Mentalist, Medium or Castle, you'll love this. The characters are vivid and entertaining, and there's genuine mystery and chills.

5.0 out of 5 stars The question is... why? 3 Jun. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
You'll ask that as you read this. Why do these women, seemingly innocent women, commit suicide -- at the very same building? The course that the investigator takes -- including a Q&A with an old flame -- leaves you hanging on every click.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Satisfying 23 Dec. 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
This novellea was about a woman protagonist which I really like. It sets in a real life place and combines the right amount of sadness, fear and sheer horror that kept me reading until the end.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb writing 30 Dec. 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I chose this novella as the first purchase for my Christmas Kindle on the strength of the glowing reviews. I am delighted to add another five stars to its well deserved ratings. This story hooked me from the first paragraph and I had to read it in one sitting. Superb, taut writing...creepy atmosphere with plenty of shudders, believable characters...everything anyone could want in a supernatural thriller. Looking forward to seeking out more of both these talented authors' work.
