Essential for Richard Hell fans,
By PJ (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Time (Audio CD)
Richard Hell's recorded output is pretty slim considering he was at one time or another a member of Television and The Heartbreakers, before going on to form the Voidoids. And this fact makes Time such a great addition for fans of Hell and the 70s New York scene in general. The first disc is based on the R.I.P. casette with a couple of added tracks. It includes a handful of Heartbreakers tracks, most notably a take on "Love Comes in Spurts" (which would later feature on the Voidoids Blank Generation album) and "Chinese Rocks", before moving on to a fantastic collection of Voidoids tracks. Highlights are alternate versions of "I'm Your Man" and "Ignore that Door" which featured on Blank Generation and Destiny Street respectively. The disc rounds off with some post-Voidoids tracks, most notably "I Been Sleepin' On It"; fantastic guitar and sax, excellent lyrics and delivery, and a reminder of what a shame it is that Hell didn't record more. The second disk is comprised of live recordings taken from two shows: with the Voidoids in 1977 and again in '78 with Elvis Costello joining them for the last four tracks. Explosive stuff from the Blank Generation repertoire and covers of The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and the Stones' "Ventilator Blues". The selection of '78 recordings includes a version of "The Kid with the Replaceable", a standout from the Voidoids relatively unknown second album Destiny Street. The sound quality of this live disc is not perfect, but it won't turn you away, and it has plenty of energy and power. Overall it's a fantastic two disc collection for fans of Hell in particular and the 70's New York punk scene in general.

dont think that because time is made of out takes and live materail that its going to weaker then his studio albums, its not. its even better! the cover versions he does on this album are incredible and all the classic hell tracks are here too, only rawer lo-fi version that i think are louds better then the LP versions which i loved before i heard this cd. the guitars on this are amazing to, im notin to guitar solos but these ones are great, buy this album now you will not regret it, i promise

Real New York Punk!,
By paulrutland@blueyonder.co.uk (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Time (Audio CD)
This Album is a must for original punk fans but especially for punters who believe that bands like The Strokes are being innovative. From the opening tracks of the original Heartbreakers with Johnny Thunders it is original without being too 'arty' like some bands of the time.As for the live disc, it is pure classic original punk. Listen for Johnny Rotten taunting the Music Machine crowd to call for an encore at the end of the Voidoids set! Another bonus for fans of the music at the time is Elvis Costello on 'You Gotta Lose' at CBGB's. All in all this album is amust have for any music collection.
